Substitutionary Atonement?
Don't catholics do this with cash all of the time?
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
It's pretty crazy to think killing something innocent can wash away crimes. What about the crime of murder that you committed to wash away the other crimes? People don't like paying for their own crimes, so kill this sheep, or pray over a goat and send it into the wilderness, or whatever.
Though it doesn't help that there seems to be a "one punishment fits all" for every crime from looking at someone lustfully to genocide and enslavement.
How about a related technique:
At some level leaders of a particular denomination, church, sect or schism realize they are not evincing due diligence in observing most Biblical prohibitions and so they rationalize they can be 'hyper' vigilant regarding a specific sin and maybe gaslight God a bit into thinking they are doing better than they really are. The classic example for me being the Methodists holding tough on gambling while turning a blind eye to divorce/remarriage, linsey woolsie clothing, eschewing serpent handling and so very, very many others . . . The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
Substitutionary atonement is just another in the long litany of immoral concepts in the Christian religion.
Even if it were somehow true, I would want no part of it. I believe I am too moral. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
But if you have some credit card debt, and I, out of kindness, pay it off for you. That seems pretty straightforward.
Would that also be considered the atonement thingy?
The world needs more yummy yummy sin eaters.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Sins (if victimless)are the most interesting things about people. Why the fuck would you want to wash them away?
God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!

Most of us want to be around people who think and act like we do, so when someone is "weird", we push them away. Or browbeat them until they conform. It's kind of odd how we like to balance the ideas of being as free as we can, but also expect people to go with the grain. |
