I chose him partly because of his badass onscreen persona (I have no idea of his offscreen chops) and partly because he’s not only white, but from the whitest nation on the face of the Earth, which would totally eliminate the point of the “black brute” stereotype so often used to justify the racial profiling that so plagues the criminal justice system.

The Rock is more famously badass, but since he’s half black and half Samoan, that would not have worked for this purpose.

Regarding the law, I think self defense laws are sufficient enough. Just being afraid for your life is a subjective thing. Even if someone was beating the shit out of me, I wouldn't necessarily fear for my life. People just 20 years could get in fights and not assume it's going to be a lethal encounter, also this is how most other cultures view it.

If someone pulls out a gun or knife and waves it at you, that's one thing. It's a whole nother ball of wax when a white guy starts shit with a black guy and then shoots him when he is losing the fight he started.

Technically, he started shit with his white girlfriend. She's the one who parked in the handicapped space. The black guy stepped in later to defend her. Personally, I'd prefer if the guy said something like "I don't want this to escalate, but if you want to turn this physical, be warned I am armed."



If the guy still charges for you knowing that, this is the sort of exception I'd say this law should be made for. Then again, in a proper self-defense scenario, there might not be enough time for that. And maybe he just got too pissed off at an able-bodied woman parking in a handicapped spot. I know some things can get me totally off my rocker, like the time I found someone at Half-Price Books put Elie Wiesel's Night in the fiction section and it took everything in my power to not run around the store demanding the balls of what jackass did that, and just trying (in as civil a fashion as I could) to get some answers from an employee. Maybe he had a sore spot about disabled parking spots, maybe he was just an asshole looking for a fight, maybe he was both. In this case, I doubt that he could have known she had a black boyfriend who'd help her when he started it.

Some do, some don't. The thing is, some SWAT teams go the opposite route. Honestly, I can't know how common each scenario is, but I know that enough work in the opposite direction that people in law enforcement joke that SWAT really stands for "Sit, Wait, and Talk." And that's why I included SWAT in my list. I'm well aware that there's a right way and a wrong way to do shit like this in wrong enforcement, and the fact that a lot don't bother to do it the right way doesn't invalidate that. And, of course, vice versa.

And since I just looked this up, I have to make a correction: the girlfriend who parked in the handicapped space is, in fact, black. I misidentified her as white because the articles about it don't mention her race (while her boyfriend's race is mentioned constantly) or show her picture, and, to be totally honest, "Brittany Jacobs" doesn't sound black. A simple GIS search proved me wrong on this case. That said, I can't be sure that's enough of an indication that he knew in advance that she'd have a boyfriend who'd beat the crap out of him before he picked a fight with her.

American society is basically a behavioral sink, especially when power comes into play. If you can't take this into account, nothing will ever be good enough.
