Atheists who announce "I'm good without god"

Do you think this is a good statement to make? It seems to me like they are trying to prove themselves to religious people. Is it a response to religious people who think atheists are less moral? I would rather not dignify that. If you wanna address that argument then bring it to them but to use that as your motivation is low rent.

You may not want to dignify the position that many theists take that atheists cannot be moral without G-d, but the reality is that there are a whole lot of theists who take that position and are very vocal about it. There are some really stupid fucking theists out there and many of them occupy homes or families with atheists and they do challenge and harass non-believers with low-brow, uninformed arguments like that. And they do other really stupid stuff like threatening theists with imaginary places like hell. (How stupid, right?)

Then theists like me have to go around apologizing for that shit.

It doesn't hurt to point out that you don't need clergy to know what's not moral. Some theists have never considered it any other way.

Sure it is.  I already know that I’m good without a religion.   I’d only say I am good without god if I am trying to get religious people to treat me as human and moral because they control a lot of social power.

I think it’s a necessary statement to make if you find yourself among company that equates belief in a god to good moral standing.

On one and only one occasion I've something along the lines of "Seriously? Are you admitting that without some old book to tell you not to, you'd be running around stealing and murdering? That's not a lack of religion, that's a lack of morals."

Of course, that friendship ended that day.
