[Shakir 4:35] And if you fear a breach between the two, then appoint judge from his people and a judge from her people; if they both desire agreement, Allah will effect harmony between them, surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.


That is they were suppose to go the Prophet (who ruled the believers per that time), and he was suppose to see what's going on, and appoint a judge from her side and from his side, the word people can perhaps better be translated as "family" here.

Whatever Khemikal, if they truly have fears that are legit, (either side) is breaching the agreement in marriage, they are suppose to take it the Prophet and he tries to see he can solve the problem by appointing one judge from each side and if they don't want agreement and want to divorce (ie. either side doesn't want to remain in this relationship), than he will divorce them.

This is so divorce will be official, but to see who's at fault, and who the children should go to, etc, Prophet needs to hear from both sides what happened right?

It must be horrible to be stuck having to defend a book full of injustice and violence, and to be required to spin it so it sounds relevant and "decent" as society changes. What is the point, honestly? Everyone interprets it how they want. If they want to beat women or kill unbelievers, they’ll interpret it that way. If they want to be a nice person, they interpret it that way. Both are neither wrong nor right. They’re just appealing to a silent authority.

The Prophet and his successors would be the best marriage councillors, but in this case, he is getting two representatives (judges) from each side, and letting them make the case for them, and then seeing if husband and wife want to solve the issue or divorce, he is not interfering more then that.

He is just seeing their side and what they want to do.

Relax bro, yes Quran makes sense, yes I proved my case that the Quran doesn't teach to beat women, as can even be seen by the verse that follows which shows what really to do if their is a breach of agreement.

The degree men have over women is in marriage -as the context of the verse suggests-; and we already know that this "degree" that men have over women in marriage is because they -the men- spend from their money & protect their wives.

So unlike what feminism suggests, men are not slaves to women and men deserve this degree. It's essential for the balance of the family. Please see the divorce rates in the non-Muslim western world where this verse is unknown.

So hitting women is okay if it lowers the divorce rate?

It's ok for men to have the authorisation to beat women because men are supposed to protect them...from men? That's a very stupid justification. In the end, men beat women and that's the problem. I have a big problem with people who beat women and I have a big problem with people who don't beat women, but spend time trying to find excuses to for those who do. What's so complicated with don't beat women. If they don't want to do what you want them to do convince them using words and arguments. If it fails, maybe you are simply wrong and accept the fact that they don't have to obey you. Apparently that was too revolutionnary for abrahamic religions.

The "eye for an eye" verse didn't specify if the "eye taken" is male or female.
You assumed that women taking their right is banned by Islam. I wonder who convinced you with that.

Let's remove imprisonment and law-enforcement punishment of women; is that what you're suggesting?

I advise people to keep searching and reflecting, but never rely on any people or person including me, to represent a religion, the only ones who can represent God's religion are his proofs and representatives appointed by him.

Atlas, honestly, how many women beat their husbands, and out of all the words God could pick when defining the role of men with respect to women, you think he is going to say beat them if they beat you? Secondly, where does it say if they beat you, it says if you fear betrayal, which is a whole different phrase.

This verse is saying you should uplift women to the extent you never accuse obedient women to God of betraying you just because of suspicion and fear, and if you do fear, do not even mention it at all to them, to the extent even in their bedrooms you don't bring it up, and continue to have intercourse.

This is saying, this is to the extent you are to honor woman and respect them, that you should not only not accuse them if you fear, you shouldn't even bring it up, as that would degrade them.

I would certainly disbelieve in the Quran if I relied on people to teach me it.

It’s a combination of the law and societal norms that decide what you have the "right" to do. If I can do something openly, and suffer no comeback, then I have been granted that right, in that area. If I suffer legal consequences or I get bad treatment from people/society, then I don’t have that right.

Whether or not I should have the right to whip someone to pieces because it says so in my favourite book, is a different matter. So is whether I should have the right to hold hands with my boyfriend without being hit with a piece of pipe, because I see that as an unreasonable reaction to a non-threatening situation. Reality trumps books.

Just another little rant for the collection!
