Dreadlocks are not ‘natural’. The armed services don’t allow people - regardless of ethnicity - to wear their hair naturally. Is this a racist policy?

The natural texture of Black people's hair is coiled. If a Black person straightens their hair, with chemicals, straighteners or other means, then it is no longer wearing naturally.

The underlying question being why is the preferred style of white europeans consequentially neutral or even The Rule™ whereas the preferred style of The Other™ is an actionable issue.  The answer is ugly, and it's that dress codes in the us (not just for schools) are biased to the cultural norms of white europeans and have a nasty history as a weaponized tool of racial discrimination.  That we persist in this behavior while simultaneously thinking "but I'm not racist, so how can what I'm doing be racist, these are just The Rules™...what's racist about rules?" is so common it's a racist trope, lol.

If it were to be found out that the school denied admission to a white child with dreadlocks, would that be a racist act? Should the school allow the wearing of powdered wigs, extremely long hair, or beauty spots and lead-based pancake makeup? All of these are white European culture. Would that be racist?

Interestingly enough....yes! Because that prohibition is, itself, firmly rooted in colonial racism..and so the white student is being penalized for presenting his or herself as Other™ and impugning the established social order and place, the wall of separation between us and them. They are "acting black" - which is bad. Everyone should aspire to behave and present themselves as upstandingly white, even if they're black.....but especially if they're white, dontchaknow!

The it’s a wash, innit? The school is applying the rules equally, irrespective of a student’s ethnicity, which is pretty much the antithesis of racism. The dress code may have racist undertones (although I’m not fully convinced of that), but the school administration don’t appear to be behaving in a racist manner.

It's not come crazy distracting hairdo. I've seen it on a lot of black guys, so I'm not sure what the rub is. Yeah, the probably just don't want a black kid at the school, but they can't say that, so they target his hair.

The equal application of racist regulations is still racist. The wonderful cover provided by "not seeming to be acting racist" is very useful in the maintenance of explicitly racist social order.
