I dunno. I've never been a big fan of the military so I can't say I'm too worked up over this. I'm 40 and still a bit overweight, so the military isn't going to want me, anyway. But I still kinda think it's stupid to ban people just for being trans. Personally, I wish we had fewer soldiers in general and used those soldiers a lot less. Get started on that and we can worry about transgender soldiers.

IMO, gender dysphoria is a disease about as much as homosexuality is a disease. It’s the way that society responds to these people that makes it so insufferable for them to live as they are. If transgendered folks weren’t marginalized and bullied by society, I wonder how much more comfortable they’d be in their own skin. Maybe comfortable and happy enough to not be considered “sick” anymore.

Speaking for myself, I'd still be uncomfortable enough in my body that I would be attempting to change it. But if I had that kind of acceptance when I was a teenager, maybe I would have changed my body before testosterone had fucked it up so much. Your body makes a lot of changes in that 11-19 range and trans people who start the hormonal aspect of transtion in that window often wind up looking a lot better for it.

Meh, the DOD said they weren't interested in the ban anyway.
A hell of alot of people sign up explicitly for medical benefits, Yonadev. That's not really "a problem", it's part of their recruiting strategy.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Hell, to him, the very fact that we exist without being set on fire is a problem. And I have to imagine the Republican base would collectively wet themselves if they knew that the VA was actually spending money helping trans people with hormones (even if it's already happening).

Sure, they're not going to stop trying. The DOD, for now anyway, appears to be looking to wait out the disaster of our current president. The economically anxious folks who get night sweats at the thought of some trans soldier recieving exactly what the service baited them in with are worried about their own problem. They're assholes.

No kidding. I mean, there is no end to the irony that the republican party says they want a small government that doesn't intrude on peoples lives, but when it comes to me, they want Uncle Sam to look whip my pants right off and get a good, long, close look at what's under them. Not to mention, their ideas of an unintrusive government go out the window when it comes to abortion, too. And they sure do think government agents (aka Cops) should get free reign to shoot whoever they want for whatever reason they want (which REALLY clashes with some of their NRA rhetoric). Is it too much for me to ask them for a little consistancy?
