"Nothing fails like success, because we don't learn anything. We only learn from failure. our successes only confirm our superstitions."
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I may defend your right to free speech, but i won't help you pass out flyers.

I think we learn much more from failure.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

If you want material advantages, a success is a success.  You can learn by becoming a success and maintaining your success.

Although we may learn more from failures, sometimes we just learn how to fail rather than how to succeed.

On the other hand, I do know successful people who confuse their expertise with knowledge of other areas.  They can become arrogant and fail to listen to people who have other kinds of expertise.

So I think the saying points out an important observation, but it's too much of an over-statement.  It comes close to rationalizing failures.

Tangentially related, I work for a very successful S&P 400 company that has a philosophy of embracing failure as a learming tool. If you're going to fail, recognize it early and course correct.

I think people who have never really been previously rewarded with success, but who nonetheless persevere with high levels of effort until eventually succeed is attained, are few and far in between.  I think majority of those who persevere and attain greater success were buttressed by confidence built upon preior lesser successes.

So while failure teaches all how to succeed, success teaches most to strive for greater success.

I'm curious about this part.

Why does success only confirm superstition

Couldn't it also show that our methods, analyses, new decisions, etc. etc. are working?

It's a quite true quote.
The PURPOSE of life is to replicate our DNA ................. (from Darwin)
The MEANING of life is the experience of living ... (from Frank Herbert)
The VALUE of life is the legacy we leave behind ..... (from observation)

In many cases, we must learn if we are to succeed.

IOW, would you say the all inclusive language of the quote takes it beyond the realm of truth? Perhaps it's tangential to truth?
