You Brits have a built-in excuse that you rarely use. Winnie was 1/2 American after all.

But lucky for the rest of us.

Before I started school, I honestly thought Churchill's first name was 'Thatbastard', based on the way my grandad talked about him.

The brits face a conundrum.  If they blame Winnie’s real faults on his American heritage, then they run the risk of having to also share credit for his imaginary virtues.

He could have been half Martian and it wouldn't have altered grandad's opinion of him.

Um reliable witnesses, sometimes text, sometimes living people? What's so hard about that? Historians basically can be a lot like private investigators.

I would posit that was a conflict lost by politicians.

Not by losing militarily.

Just a niggle. Sorry.

No, it was simply a contest the US couldn't win. Half way round the world against a committed opponent with significant popular support, who had strong allies on their doorstep and with a corrupt and deeply unpopular US ally.

The objective was to stop communism from spreading any further. It didn't.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

How much further did it spread?

And, of course, the Soviets spent themselves into oblivion trying to keep up with the non-communists, a much more subtle war that played to the capitalists' strengths.

Since not knowing history dooms one to repeating it,  I would say suckers are those who thinks history is for suckers.

From what I remember, Santayana basically said, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it."  But you can expect even worse when the history you think you know is a load of bullshit to begin with.  In that regard, history is for suckers.  Do you think you have what it takes to take the red pill and learn the truth about history?  Send me a PM if you do.
