Police don't deter crime. I thought we learned that when NY Cops cut back on arrests to protest their treatment, and crime went down.

You do have an ... amazing ... grasp of the issues.
Well, if cops don’t prevent crime, and they don’t respond to crimes already committed, what’s the point of having them at all?
Boru wtf?

Do you believe in prayers affecting outcomes too?

You have two separate datums. Not causality. Police cars are frequently parked outside banks when they're not in use. Why? To deter crime. How is this measured? It isn't.

Raw numbers of patrol officers have been declining for years. Between 1997 and 2016 we went from 242/100k - 217/100k (police/res). During that same period, violent crime dropped 37%.
Turns out that crime doesn't go up or down based on staffing, it goes up or down based on what officers are doing with their time. Hmn...sounds familiar.
-and if crown vics deter crime, then we should lay off some cops and buy more crown vics. They're cheaper, and less prone to accidentally killing our fellow citizen, or gassing the people who protest it.

I can go find 2 studies that increased policing DOES lower certain crimes - robbery for one.....
We could throw studies back and forth all day z or simply get down to comparing dick length.....
Nothing proved.

What you'll find is that cops spending more of their billed hours actively participating in some anti robbery program, reduces robberies. Not hiring more cops, or paying cops more.
Increased staffing and increased wages does not equate to increased policing, or to lower crime rates. Just ask the SPD.
There are other more effective and less costly ways to reduce robberies, as well, as has already been explained. The use of force by the state should probably be the last line, and the most scrutinized and contained line, wouldn't you agree? These are the guys who are coming to take your -insert x here-, after all.
