There's no doubt about this. I've been getting more concerned about the direction of politics during the last decade and I was convinced the US is on a trajectory to eventual dissolution. Before the election, I though maybe we had another 25 years or more, but now, after the last 2 months and the insurrection, it looks like any election cycle could be the last our country ever sees. We are dangerously close to the time of dictators. I would say the GOP needs to purge itself of this rot and set its members straight, but it's been taken over sort of like the agents in The Matrix. The GOP is now the party of white supremacy. Trump was a buffoonish version of Mussolini; the next will be far more dangerous. Unless something happens soon, I don't believe we have even ten more years left as a 50 United States. And I have no idea what might change our current path.
This is not unprecedented. Rome's republic failed under similar strains and circumstances. A popular figure appears who claims he will solve all our problems and blames them on "those" people over there. Hitler took full advantage of these same fault lines in Germany. It sounds almost surreal to say these things but I believe they are for real. I've watched those videos of the insurrection at the Capitol several times. A lot of those people may go to jail, but there are millions of them! I'm going to have to work with a lot of them and I don't know how I'm going to stand it.

People who think Trump has their best interests at heart are the same kind of people who think strippers really like them.

I'd say that's debatable. He was certainly a Regan supporter and advocate of much of the GOP platform of the 80's, but he was also the guy who convinced Nixon to resign, supported liberal issues like homosexual rights and abortion rights, and he absolutely despised the religious right. 1980 was the clear demarcation line of the GOP's trajectory toward a party of fascism, but the movement since around 2012 has been most significant, almost a vertical line. The emergence of the tea party was really the final step. I view Trump's election as nothing more than his opportunism of the tea party. He didn't start that movement but he sure recognized the opportunity to jump to its leadership.
Why is it so?

She was shot by a member of Pence's security detail as she was sticking her head through a broken window to enter the Capitol Building. It was a tragedy, but it was justified. Some of the people trying to gain entry were clearly prepared to take hostages. Some of them had firearms, some of them had explosive or incendiary devices. It's a shame she decided breaking into the Capitol Building was the right choice for her, and it is a shame that her choice resulted in her death. It's even a shame that the guy who tasered himself in the balls repeatedly and died of a heart attack had to lose his life over this dipshittery. And it's a shame that the cop who was a Trump supporter, Brian Sicknick, died of his injuries from being beaten with a fire extinguisher. The whole damn thing, beginning to end, was an outrage.

The extent to which the gop has become a party of white supremacy is the extent to which it's expression is no longer welcome in the other party and the extent to which it's fundamental principles as espoused by the base are informed by white supremacist propaganda.
As we go back in time, dems were more and more amenable to white supremacy, and the principles the base espoused more and more dependent on the propaganda of white supremacy.
Quote:In a recent paper, “Why did the Democrats Lose the South? Bringing New Data to an Old Debate (PDF),” Princeton’s Ilyana Kuziemko and Yale’s Ebonya Washington use this data to argue that nearly all of the Democratic Party’s losses in the South from 1958-1980 can be explained by white voters’ racially conservative views.. They authors find almost no role for income growth among white voters or non-race-related policy preferences in explaining why white Southern voters left the party. Their findings help explain why some of the poorest parts of the country now serve as the base of the political party that is least supportive of redistribution. According to their research, this irony of the modern American political system can be directly linked to the racially conservative ideologies of Southern voters in the 1960s.
Below are some of the main findings and key points from the tudy.
https://economics.princeton.edu/working-...ld-debate/
Long story short (and picking up where it leaves off) it started in the spring of 1963, and would take twenty years for all of the newly reshuffled voters to find their place (if any) in the new paradigm. By 1980, voters who were coming of political age in 63 would be older and greater positions of authority and with greater ability or tools to disseminate their ideology. It would take another 20 years to produce the voters of that demographic, and hey presto, whadda you know, right about then some planes hit some buildings.
From there, we have the humiliation of bush followed by eight years of a black man in the white house. Trump was, in a very palpable sense, revenge for obama. Revenge for the indignity of obama. Revenge for the illegitimacy of obama. Revenge for the injustice of white victimization and...fwiw...exactly the kind of person you'd expect to be shitty enough to give you what you wanted...if what you wanted was the reinforcement of white supremacy.

The impeachment is moving forward. If passed the earliest it could reach the Senate is the 19th. More likely it will be delivered to a functioning Senate with a Democratic majority. This means T.rump won't be removed from office but it can mean that he will never be allowed to hold a Federal office again. That would make him useless for the Grim Old Party.

So this false comparison he keeps peddling fails.
Given the 11 Molotov cocktails one rioter/insurgent brought, they were definitely considering burning things down.

At least 14 DC Metropolitan Police officers were injured, including one who was hospitalized after suffering serious injuries when he was pulled into a crowd and assaulted, Police Chief Robert Contee said. One officer had significant facial injuries from being struck by a projectile, and another officer was hospitalized after being pepper-sprayed.
And another, police officer, Howard Liebengood, took his own life Saturday.
