The United States and the growing divide

I’m starting to think that the Balkanization of the US might be the best solution for all concerned.

Will it turn out well or poorly? It's a mystery. Prediction is impossible. But it is true that we are at an inflection point from which things could go terribly wrong, when we usually aren't.

RE: The United States and the growing divide
I've been saying for a several years now that the US is creeping toward a massive shift, and Trump gave it a big shove. I don't believe there will be another war, but I do believe that political and other values will become so massively diverse that states will peel off, one or two at a time and the decision will be that it's just too painful to keep trying to hold it together. The result will be a patchwork of as many as 10 new nations and there's absolutely no question that the power and influence the US once held will be gone forever.

If you think it can't happen, just consider Great Britain leaving the EU. Yes, I understand there's significant differences there, but Brexit was still considered a massive shift in European politics. GB gave up a lot of things just to control its own boarders. Scotland is again raising the question of exiting the UK (Scotlexiting?). The old empire is shrinking before our very eyes. Look closely, because that's the future of the US, except it will be far, far messier and will likely result in massive shifts in population. I don't expect to see the end result but I do expect to see the beginning.

Of course I'm not certain of any of this. It's possible that some existential crisis will appear and unite us all again. Not holding my breath, though.

The two extremes will even each other out eventually.

Those are my thoughts too.

I have been hearing a lot from my Christian family members about the tragic possibility of losing the United States and the founding principles as if it's some idol or sacred text. So, I guess I'm frustrated about that aspect, the "God/Christian country" pedestal they seem to have. I'm not saying it'll be a blast for the country to split up and be at war(if that'll even happen) but it's not perfect, never been perfect.

Some thought that was the case with Gingrich and Reagan, that things would return to center. They didn't. The right has marched lockstep towards this cliff for two generations.

There isn't going to be a civil war, just regular old terrorism.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Ironically, those that scream the loudest about the "founding principles" are the least likely to actually support them.  What they mean by "freedom" is that white, Christians (and mostly just men) get to dictate everything.

Unfortunately, it never seems to be them. They're pretty angry about that - to the point of just swearing themselves in for shit. Skip the middleman, he keeps fucking them, right?

Just need those aliens to attack, with plans of extermination, so humanity can band together with a "We will not go gentle, FUCK YOU!"
Then humans can live happily ever after, in the land of gum drops and rainbows.

Funny, I seem to recall that movie ended with a virus as well.
