It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Contrary to popular belief, there wasn't simply a single short loop of towel in these things.  It was a large reel of clean towel material fed through the machine.  The dirty and wet towel portion was rolled up inside, to be swapped out with a clean one when they were all used up.  Obviously not practical in a high-traffic restroom.
