When televisions become deadly they will have to write a law covering liabilities of those.

By giving the kid access to the safe the father negates any right to protection from liability by way of the exemption.....

But the gun was stolen from a locked safe. Who had the combination ( or how they got it) seems immaterial.

To clarify -- if you leave your guns unlocked - and someone breaks in and steals them - you the gun owner can be held criminally and civilly liable for those guns misuse.

The ONLY exemption is if they are stolen from a locked gun safe.

So if you give someone access - you can ( and should) be held liable if they access and misuse your guns.

It absolutely is material.

If I give you the combination - I give you access. If you have access - you can take the gun - and I cannot claim it is stolen.

I'm all for punishing bad storage of arms, but I think OB is trying to change the subject away from America's gun culture problem, and make it all a "storage problem".

This wasn't a toddler accidentally picking up a loaded firearm. This was a 15 y/o who decided to murder.

And I think you are making some pretty stupid assumptions.

I want to see those responsible held liable.

You want to see ALL GUN OWNERS punished.

But, allowing the public to own firearms keeps you safe!

They just announced on the radio that a 4th teen has died as a result of his injuries and one student is on a ventilator after surgery.

The dick swinging contest aside, the fact remains. Yet again, children have been murdered at their school.

Since 1970, there have been over 100 school shootings in the US. Yet from the left we have yet more impotent rage. From the right the mantra remains "Fuck you, don't take my gun(s)"

As an outsider it seems clear these shootings will continue until there is the political will to restrict gun ownership and to dismantle the fraught US gun culture.  I am reminded once again that (imo) the US gun culture is based on the wilful  misinterpretation of the Second Amendment.

The gun owners of America seem willing to accept an indefinite number of dead children ,so long as they get to keep their guns. My response to that situation is a kind of bemused contempt.

But hey, I'm only a foreigner, how can I possibly understand? I live in a country with strict gun control legislation. A country which has never had a school shooting.  A country in which the people are not afraid of our politicians.

The Supreme Court has weighed in on the second amendment, and decided that right to arms includes their use for self defense, as well as defense of the state.

I'm aware of the Supreme Court rulings and this did not change my opinion. The logic has always escaped me . Mercifully, I had the great good fortune to be born in Australia.  Cool
