Alot of nde reports are made by people who were nowhere near death in the first place.

Clearly we need a study. Put a group of volunteers in cardiac arrest, shock them back to life, and ask them what they remember. It would help if we could measure brain activity at the edge of death. So many scientific inquiries boil down to measurement challenges.
I'll post sign up sheets in the dorms.

"Sweetheart, why did you let them put me on the ambulance naked?"
"They tried to get your clothes on but you kept fighting them off. Where did you learn that stuff?"
"I guess church."

Anybody remember Sam Parnia's AWARE study from c 10 years back. That should have killed the idea of NDEs stone dead. Despite changing the methodology and criteria for acceptable evidence on at least two occasions all the study could point to was a former heart attack patient who could "recall" doctors trying to resucitate him a number of years after the heart attack. Said recollection read like an episode of ER and not what actually happens in such an event.
Of course before eventually releasing the study, Parnia sat on it for four years after completing it, there were plenty of interim reports which read "you won't believe the evidence we gathered of NDEs and the afterlife"; whereas the report was slipped out with no fanfare or publicity.
