I think it goes back to what Boru said in the OP: “Doing things that make your constituents lives better isn’t a bribe. It is - literally - your fucking job.” The more I look at politics, the more convinced I become that not only does the right (especially in America) reject that premise, but that rejection is the defining characteristic; everything else follows from that. If anything they do benefits anyone besides themselves, plutocrats, the police/military/anyone who makes their living with firearms, and maybe hate groups, it's almost certainly by accident.

You mean like spending tax dollars creating student aid and grants to improve the collective good by making college affordable? Got no problem with that. Got a problem with people not paying what they agreed to pay back..... Especially so when it' s some politician trying to humjob potential voters.
So I take it that, according to Biker, 1 in 8 Americans are deadbeats who care more about buying the newest gaming system than paying off their college debts.
Debts they took on because the economy all but requires a college degree for most jobs by this point, especially if you expect to afford to eat anything better than dog food (and even graduating is no guarantee that you'll actually get a job) and the costs of college tuition keep going up, often by significantly more than could be justified by inflation. And the pandemic is making the economy even worse, making it even harder to actually get a job. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the consequences of student debt. And I'd be part of that 1 in 8 if not for the fact that my grandmother's home sold shortly after I graduated from Columbia and I had to give much of the proceeds to the lenders to pay off the loans.

We spent the last 8 years paying off.my SO's student loans - by scrimping - and making double payments every month. We have not taken a vacation in that entire time. No new toys. Every purchase has to be considered. When you take a loan - you take on the MORAL as well as the legal obligation to pay it back.... If that' s too hard for you - pay cash - or do without.
And are you on minimum wage? What's your job security like? How much do they expect you to pay off? You say you spent the last couple years paying off your SO's debt, so what was your financial situation before you took their debts on yourself? Because I can guarantee that there's millions who are worse off that you and yours.
And they can appreciate the fact that, for a good-sized portion of the population, the choice is either to not go to college and have an extremely slim chance of getting a job you can live on or go into debt so you can pay off the college tuition that you spent so you could have a slightly higher chance of getting a job you can live on, even if, in practice, you just end up taking the first job that will actually hire you just because you need to pay off those debts and stay there because there's no real reason to assume that you'll get anything that pays better.

Try getting a loan, first. I could never get one, because the banks kept claiming I needed something as collateral.
Well, if I had anything for collateral, I wouldn't need this freaking loan, stupid bank people.

Got a problem with the government doing something for people who are actually struggling and shouldn't have to live in poverty or work themselves to death at a shitty job just to pay it off... Apparently so.

"Moral" is for theists and philosophers. If you want to play that card, question the morality of those who would tie down a kid with no financial experience.
