THE Gun Thread
RE: THE Gun Thread
I'll repeat my earlier post...

To Serve and Protect...isn't that sort of the motto of the police?

Not to watch and do nothing.

I must have missed another memo.

Last I checked KFC isn't a tax-funded public organization. To be fair you might as well hire them to do the policing. They couldn't fuck it up any worst than 60 freaking cops that 70 minutes to do fuck all while a group of kids were being slaughtered.

What makes you think that your life is worth more than anyone else' s ?- THAT is the real question.....

If someone wants to put their life on the line for someone else - fine - that' s very noble..

But to REQUIRE someone to do so?

What makes you think you have the right to demand such things? That sort of thing is what religious fanatics and royalty do - not free people...

It’s not that at all. I’ll try again:

According to you and the Supreme Court, all a cop has to do to not do his or her job is to state that they feel doing so would put them in harm’s way.

‘Officer Smith, why didn’t you write that speeder a ticket?’ ‘Thought they might have had a gun, Sarge.’

‘Constable Williams, why haven’t you responded to that domestic violence report?’ ‘Gee, Sarge - tempers at that house are running high - I might get hurt.’

‘Officer Dusenberry, you’re on school crossing duty this week.’ ‘Can’t do it, Sarge. Have you SEEN the traffic on that road? I could get run over.’

Leaving aside the no-dashing-into-gun-battle scenario, what is there to prevent cops from doing any of the things they’ve sworn to do? All they’d have to do is play the ‘I’m afraid for my life’ card to be able to do nothing at all.

God, I bet everyone wishes they could get paid to not do their job because they could just say they feared for their lives

Pizza Delivery Guy- The customer might be a serial killer.

Roofer - I might fall

Prison Guard- That place is full of psychos!

The fact that most cops WILL risk their lives even when not legally required to do so (biker has mentioned this) speaks well of those individuals. But the SCOTUS ruling is wrong-headed. It gives cops carte blanche to be derelict in their duty without repercussions.

If you aren’t willing to risk your life for the public good, you probably shouldn’t have picked a career in law enforcement.

By your rules - our military should be able to order our soldiers to kamakazi into the enemy....

Or maybe they shouldn' t have picked the military as a career???

The point of the SCOTUS ruling is cops cannot be held ciivilly or criminally negligent for failure to save your butt..... It doesn't however guarantee them a job if they refuse and public sentiment or police policy goes against that.

If you apply the SCOTUS ruling to the military, a soldier could refuse to go into battle.

But you insist on missing my point - under the SCOTUS ruling, ANY cop could refuse to enforce ANY law by claiming it put him in harm’s way, whether it actually did or not. And it would virtually guarantee his job, because the Court has already ruled in his favour.

Following orders to go into dangerous situations that might result in death is not the same as a kamikaze. If they wanted to avoid possible death they probably should go for another career and giving anyone we give authority to immunity from the consequences of failure is a dangerous idea.
