Yahweh is traditionally thought of as being very similar to Zeus, an elderly yet youthful bearded man who sits on a celestial throne in the clouds or on some mountaintop. Even the whole lightning-striking-the-sinner theme is Zeus' schtick. Yahweh never once strikes anyone with lightning. He always uses columns of fire, plagues or invading foreign armies.

I think you've pretty much summed it up in the original post. God is whatever his followers want him to be. Ask liberal Christians what God is like and he comes of as kind of a decent guy. Ask Republicans and God hates abortion and Muslims. Ask the WBC, and God hates gays and just about everything else, except of course the Phelps family. Ask Muslims, and God hates infidels and for women to be uncovered in public.
If it seems I'm focusing too much on the hate, well, there's not much else to differentiate between the different gods people worship. They all hate something, and it always seems to coincide with what the followers tend to hate.

I'm actually one of the few young White, males who hasn't been tricked into hating himself, his community and his ancestors. So, no, I don't see god as a White Republican.

I'm the kind of person who's had conversations with almost every kind of Christian, and I've seen some really messed up ways that people represent God. Usually when I talk to atheists they would first of all like to clarify that God is a fairy tale, and then go on to describe how God is a concept people use for their own purposes, and He's usually ends up sounding like a jerk. Agnostics have mentioned to me more than once that they object to any "God" that controls people through guilt and shame. I always reply, "I totally agree with you." Because that's not the image of God I have at all.

ALL religions were invented by men for men, to meet human needs. Without exception, they reflect the needs,fears,personality and character of the individuals who invent them and of those who follow them.
The Abrahamic faiths provide graphic examples. Their holy books are so full of contradictions that the believer has no choice but to cherry pick what to believe to provide an emphasis which suits him. Hence you have the Mother Theresa type, Fred Phelps, Sufi mystics,suicide bombers, reform and Hasidic Jews,Catholics, Protestants and Eastern Rites Christians.
