Gun Nuts..A Whole New Spin
#61
RE: Gun Nuts..A Whole New Spin
Quote:Just so. Far too often, the gun faction wants to afford the Founding Fathers some level of prescience which would act as a defense to go everywhere carrying concealed. 'Twasn't so.

It's also irrelevant .

The US constitution was intentionally designed as a living document, able to be changed. Hence the Bill Of Rights. The US constitution AND ITS INTERPRETATIONS are meant to reflect the needs and wishes of "we the people" ,as are all constitutions.

My perception is that the current position of firearms in US society reflects the wishes of vested interests via the corrupt lobbying system, but not wishes of the majority of the population. This perception has been supported by polls in the US for decades.

Very likely the case, and with faces like Heston and Selleck at its fore, the NRA has had serious clout in making this happen.

Chook, looks like your perception of the current position of US citizens on gun ownership is incorrect. Support among the general public for stricter gun control laws in the US have been in decline for decades. For the last few years the polls indicate that most Americans do not support stricter gun control laws.

Some of you might be surprised that I, a certified gun nut and NRA life member, and many like me would support things like improved background checks, mandatory safety and proficiency training requirements for gun ownership.

On the other hand I don’t support further restrictions on the types of weapons law abiding US citizens are allowed to own. The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 put an excise tax and mandatory registration on things like automatic weapons. Since that time there has been only one conviction for a homicide involving an automatic weapon by the legal owner of a NFA registered weapon. In that case, an Ohio police officer used his NFA registered MAC-11 .380 to murder an informant. You are going to have a hard time convincing me that American citizens should not be allowed to own machineguns since the only example in the US of a violent crime being committed with a legally owned machinegun in 77 years was committed by not by a civilian but a police officer.

Based on the above statistics, should bazookas and Howitzers also be legal to own in loaded and operating condition?

With a BAFTE Destructive Device Permit, right? What I wonder is why any average joe needs either a bazooka or an AK74?

If it was manufactured and NFA register before 1986, there are no state our local laws prohibiting procession, and your local chief LEO will sign off on it you too can own one after you pay the $200 tax and the purchase price. As to why, well that is going to depend on the average Joe. Collector, enthusiast, movie prop guy… Why don’t you ask Gawdzilla why he needs two .50 caliber machine guns?

BTW. I own an AK47.

True of much of the government at all levels, Pad.

Seems to depend on how the question is asked and who answers, Pap.

Which is why I added that even people like me support some types of enhanced gun control. I even think the NRA would come out behind mandatory safety training for new purchasers if it could be made available at no cost to low income individuals. The reason I believe that is because every member of the private range I belong to is OK with the idea. We are all NRA members.

Thanks for the info, pappy. I've fired most of the common assault rifles. I carried an AR15 when I was with the sheriff's dept-until I ended up with a truck and no trunk. A friend of mine collected such things, so I had range time with AK47's and 74's, M16's, a Thompson (with the drum) and an Uzi, to name a few.

That said, I don't see a reason that non military, non LEO citizens should need them.
