Try not to be embarrassed and try to stop worrying; it shows and makes you look desperate. (which of course you are)

The first time can be badly overestimated,especially if you are both virgins.

Anyhow, back to the original question, I was 17, almost 18 when I had sex for the first time. When people say that "you should be ready", what they mean is that you should yearn for cock/pussy. When the idea isn't scary anymore, then you know you're ready. You can be nervous still, but if you have time to think "is this such a good idea after all?" then I would dare say that you aren't ready.
When doing it for the first time, I say go for a girl (I'm assuming that you're straight) with a good sense of humor. To be able to laugh with each other, if something goes wrong can save the situation from being awkward. And to have sex with someone new is always different, even though you know the drill, you don't know what the person in front of you likes. So why not get as much practice as possible, if you haven't met that special someone yet?
Above all: remember the condoms. Safe sex is the best sex (at least until you know your partner well and can move to other contraception methods or having babies)

The first time I stepped up to a stripper pole and did my first dance I was a virgin. It was 4 days after my 18th birthday. I did not have sex for the first time until 3 months later. Why? Because I am the product of teen parents and didn't want to continue the cycle. Also because I was terribly confused about my sexuality. I've always been into men, but I felt like a man on the inside... slightly feminine, but mostly I was angry as shit that I didn't have a penis. Yes. I was taking care of my 2 younger sisters, one of whom just graduated from college and is now a Veterinarian, the other graduated last year and is a high school english teacher. I paid for both of their educations.
