Do try to be less obvious.

Yes, I would. I fail to see where I insulted him, even in the slightest, Frods. I understand that you were merely saying that my post fell by the wayside. However, I would venture to say it went more than by the wayside. Zaki went ahead and fully implied I was saying things I was not. That tends to rub me the wrong way.
I never said you insulted him.

Zak is continuing along with all he can get out of people at this point, beyond insults. His bravado is what you're attacking.

He's still remaining calm and focussed. Maybe there should be a medal for that.

I respect that and I try to lead conversation in the right direction as much as possible. It's rather hard when the newb has already had a meltdown by the time I get there. Hard to tell people to lay off him when he is going batshit.
Except this time you're not helping maybe?

This is where I take umbrage, Frodo. This is not my forum.
I was talking the collective 'you'.

If the atheists are preventing reasoned discussion it's a problem. Or maybe it's convenient.

I have tried explaining to people that I cannot chastise someone for being insulting if they give it right back. None of this has worked, thusfar. Either people get the idea that it feels like a mob because there is more than one atheist here or they run away. It's there prerogative. I am tired of trying to get them to stay only to feel like an idiot when they post a freakout thread saying they are leaving because atheists are all meanie poopy faces.
LoL Wink

You're too nice Shell. I wouldn't have the patience. And you do a great job. You know I think the world of you. Of course some won't get it.

No matter how nice I am in private messages and how much I try to coax newbs, 1 out of 10, at best, actually respects me and stays.
Kudos to you.

That's lovely. However, he reported no posts and relished jumping right in on the bandwagon. If he didn't like it, he could have reported it and rose above it. Instead, like so many others, he decided to join in because insulting atheists is apparently as much fun as insulting theists.
He had no choice did he. If he complained you'd call him a whining theist. If he fights you call him a troll. The issue is that he started civil.

Yes, pretty pathetic, isn't it?
Indeed. But I don't blame the consequence of trolling, I blame the trolls (the people who won't let up with name calling).

I am not to blame for the state of this. Theists do not get the right idea when they come in here. They think the atheists will be awed at their "proof" of god and inevitably are disappointed. I sowed that? Give me a break, Frodo. I might be present quite a bit, but I am not the judge, jury and executioner here. In fact, I think I need a break from this place.
Well one of the site's strap lines is something along the lines of giving everyone a voice. That isn't the case.

What you [collectively] sow is flame baiting.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you weren't around for his second post. Where he began to draw the broad brush and assert that people had made claims that they did not. It's okay if that's the case. The guy could post as quickly as I do. He did not start off civil. He started off as a troll. He then proceeded to edit, equivocate, and just flat out make shit up, about just about anyone who responded to absolutely anything he posted. He had nothing left to say after about a dozen posts, and littered multiple threads with the exact same argument, regardless of what anyone else was discussing, in exactly the same manner. Not an ounce of sympathy from me.

(I stand corrected, it was his third post, fallibility of memory, just checked)

You said I threw in a small insult for good measure. We can let that go, though. I'm not put out.

Not at all. I take umbrage to the fact that he is quite intentionally saying I said things I did not. Would you not find that insulting?

Yeah, we can call it the happiest flamer award.

Quote:Except this time you're not helping maybe?

I came in here to discuss the topic, which was derailed immediately by Zaki. I think my posts speak for my intentions.

(September 30, 2011 at 1:28 pm)fr0d0 Wrote: If the atheists are preventing reasoned discussion it's a problem. Or maybe it's convenient.

Of course it is a problem. I have insisted atheists back off before. I'm sure some remember it less than fondly.

Quote:You're too nice Shell. I wouldn't have the patience. And you do a great job. You know I think the world of you. Of course some won't get it.

I don't have the patience. Wink I fake it. I like you a bunch too, Frodo. Our mutual respect is certainly not at stake over disagreements.

Quote:He had no choice did he. If he complained you'd call him a whining theist. If he fights you call him a troll. The issue is that he started civil.

Of course he did, Frodo. It might not seem like it, but there is a great deal of debate whenever a post is reported. Sometimes, the action to take is obvious. Other time, I will read the thread thoroughly, as will others. There have been times when I came to the defense of a new theist and then stepped in the thread and told everyone to back off. I know you are not privy to all of that and that every post I make is not under your scrutiny, but I assure you, I do my utmost to be unbiased, as do the rest of the team. It's not the fighting that gets one labeled as a troll, it is the trolling. Oftentimes, there are private messages with the newb that we do not share with the members. You may not see the reason for a banning or stern talking to, but they are always there.

Quote:Indeed. But I don't blame the consequence of trolling, I blame the trolls (the people who won't let up with name calling).

That's a hard one for me. I know some people are sensitive, but I'm just not a fan of stopping every insult if there is discussion among it. However, I do agree that if people cannot control themselves, we have a problem.

Quote:Well one of the site's strap lines is something along the lines of giving everyone a voice. That isn't the case.

They do have a voice. I cannot help that they choose to use that voice to mock and flame the current members. I don't understand how you expect me to be fair when you want to be overly lenient with theist flamers. I can't apply both extremes as a mod, Frodo. I certainly try very hard to remain in the middle.

I'm hapy to leave it there Shell. Thank you for indulging me. I can't think straight ATM, banging head from staying up until 2 last night, plus a hot day. Suffice to say... I don't think you should be overly lenient. I guess it's frustrating when prospective discussions are railroaded out of existence. I guess Zak was on a tramline outta here. Perhaps he was no more than a troll. He seemed to have a point to me, and I was interested in it. Maybe it was just anti atheist, as his other activity on the web that I checked mirrored.

I wanna say: thanks to all the staff for doing a great and too often thankless job. I certainly appreciate it, even though I like to torment you.

Thanks, Frodo. It is a bummer when conversations get annihilated. Trust me, I feel it too. I hope you get better fast.
