I would actually say to my atheist friend that the preacher wasn't committing a Christian act by shooting his congregation. Christians, per se, are capable of anything. they're only people after all.
We mistakenly attribute the label 'Christian' to mean purely Christ like, when no one actually can be that.
What I'm talking about when referring to Catholics though, is something different. Catholic means to me a member of the Catholic church. It isn't, to the best of my understanding, a requirement of membership of the Catholic Church that you aim to follow Jesus as expressly stipulated in the Bible. That you make a conscious decision, entirely under your own steam, to believe that Jesus died for your sins and you act on that.
Uniquely Catholics substitute the definition 'Christian' with 'Catholic'. The Christian label is the important bit. the denomination not so. Not since the reformation has the Catholic Church been considered the one true church. It's can no longer claim the title 'Universal'.
