Having witnessed the Ice here in Lincoln, I'd go a little farther north. I'm originally from SD. Ice gets thick enough to drive your SUV on the lake. Still not a huge fan though, I've known a couple people who fell in.

Yea, growing up in N Platte about once every 3 to 4 years some yahoo would drive out on the lake and fall through. We'd try to find out when the vehicle was going to be retrieved and make a day of it watching. Hilarity would always ensue!

Some of those operations are pretty slick. They've got it figured out pretty well. The only problem, besides the fact that your car is totaled, is in SD I know you get a fine for everyday your car is in the lake.
