Yabut, they didn't use a sawtooth track. Originally, steam locomotives had gear wheels and toothed tracks (on one rail) to ensure traction. But it was discovered that the weight was sufficient to keep traction and the teeth pretty much went away.

I've seen some old 50's ford prototypes where they experimented with a gyro on a 2 wheeled car also.

I could be wrong but "cog railways" still in use?

True. Shy  Anyplace the slope is too steep. I realized that I had over-generalized after I posted, but I had to go work on my truck, so I said "Fuck it".
