The way I heard it explained was that he was done creatin' stuff. He created, he rested, you can't ask a man to fire up the gill again and create new stuff. So instead he took stuff he already created and made different stuff out of it. To keep it in context, I did hear this from the same people who taught me that men have one fewer ribs than women.

The real question is why she thought to make male and female of everything except his favorite creation in the first place. She created all the plants and animals to make more. There were already a shitload of angels. But just one dude in all of creation with no way to make more. Did it slip her mind? And what was up with the foreskin? At what point did God say, "You know, I really don't like that feature. But fuck, I'm done creatin'. I guess he'll just have to cut it off"? And why would an all-powerful god need to rest after creation? Doesn't that suggest she's only "mostly powerful"?

I will give it a shot; actually it is a very good question you ask and has a much deeper meaning than some might suggest.

Initially man was created in the image of God; God chose to form woman from man as an extension of this creation, not as a separate entity.

Woman was designed to complement man, as a companion for man. I believe the term used is "suitable helper", equals. There is nothing subservient or second class citizen about it.

This concept is also reflected in the marriage covenant between husband and wife.
