Why do you think there is a strong push for reparations this election cycle, it isn't really debatable that racist policies of the past still affect descendants of slavery. Also I should add that the last known former slave died in 1971, so we're not that far removed.
Yes--Slavery was simply the opening act. The United States government is directly responsible for a legion of atrocities committed against Black Americans that extend well beyond chattel slavery. Laid out line by line, it's quite apparent that the U.S. government never had any intention for Black Americans being anything other than a permanent underclass post-slavery and continuously enacted policy with the express purpose of inflicting maximum damage to the Black collective.
Which brings us to a Democratic Party that rejects restorative justice for Black Americans, yet demands that we come to their aid in saving America from itself.
No fucking way.
No reparations, no vote.
Let the chips fall where they may.

Reparations is literally proposed for descendants of slaves. Therefore, slavery is the issue on the table. You've never been a slave. Therefore, you aren't owed money for slavery.
Fix the problems that exist now? Hell, yes. Expect my taxes to pay you for something that never happened to you and that my ancestors never perpetrated? Um, no. I would have no problem paying reparations to people who had been slaves and their immediate family members. None of them are alive anymore. I don't blame you for wanting money. I like money too, but I won't get it because my great, great so-and-so walked the Trail of Tears. I'm also not going to support taking it from the country's depleted coffers when the majority of us aren't descended from slaveowners, and even those that are don't own any damn slaves.

My husband and I spend a lot of time doing technical things together, which leads to a lot of misunderstandings. One or the other of us is usually saying some iteration of "you don't understand what I'm saying." We actively replaced that with, "Maybe I'm not explaining myself well." The reason I bring this up is because instead of writing a detailed post about what you think I'm misunderstanding, you just say it's gone over my head. Why don't you explain carefully what you think needs to happen for inherent white supremacy to change? What specifically do you think white people aren't doing right? Being not good enough allies isn't really an explanation. Sure, I don't agree with reparations, but nearly half of black people don't, either. What else?

If I may,in the context of ws, the problem is that "white people doing things right" actually supports ws - as it's been centered since the inception of our nation.
When the water is racism, there is no particular way of swimming that doesn't produce or support some racist effect.

Do you mean status quo when you say right, because I'm asking her what she thinks right looks like. We have no idea what white people doing things right by her looks like unless she says it. If I missed her saying it, I apologize. I don't remember.

Wow. It appears that you're dreadfully uniformed regarding this subject. Read up on the various cases being made for reparations if you're interested. Or don't.
Makes no difference to me.
I didn't make that post with intention of making an exhaustive effort in trying to convince you of anything.
I was simply relaying to Huggy that I'm no longer voting for candidates or parties who continue to talk around and/or dismiss Black Americans' legitimate requests for substantive action and redress. Enough is enough.

Lol...Do you seriously think I'm going to go round and round with you on this shit again?
Absolutely not.
Quit concerning yourself with what some random Black chick online thinks and just do whatever it is you feel led to do, Shell.

@ Athene - What, in your opinion, could white people in the US do to convince you that they aren’t white supremacists? Is it limited to supporting reparations, or are there other things?

Seriously? Back to the lab, Dexter.
Next time, try asking questions that aren't quite so loaded and moot.

It appears that the answer is nothing. Nothing can be done by a white person to prove to a black person that they aren't a white supremacist. We white American folk are all painted with that same brush.

Fuxxake, I was just asking. It isn’t a loaded question. Try to be a little less paranoid and a little more polite.
