A question about atheistic “beliefs” (opinions, guesses, etc.)

@Frank Apisa

Why are you putting the word believe in quotation marks?
Nay_Sayer: “Nothing is impossible if you dream big enough, or in this case, nothing is impossible if you use a barrel of KY Jelly and a miniature horse.”

Because in discussions about whether or not gods exist...a "belief" seems to me to be nothing but a blind guess in disguise.

You may not agree with that. Okay with me.

But I feel so strongly about it, I choose to encase the word in quote marks.

Like Catholic is a sub branch of christianity.

There are agnostic theists (I was one for awhile) so....

Can you please make your case for how “belief” and “guess” are synonymous? I’m still waiting on the edge of my seat for that “schooling” you promised me.

What do you “blindly guess” about Santa Clause?

Someone can identify as an atheist all day long, but if they believe in any gods, they aren't one.

I did not say they were synonymous. Read what I wrote.

Quote:I’m still waiting on the edge of my seat for that “schooling” you promised me.
I said that you could ASK me to school you. So far you haven't. If you want me to school you, ask for it. Tell me what you want to be schooled on.

Santa Clause!!!!

What a genius.

You must be an atheist.

Explain.

What is there to explain?

If someone says "There are no gods"...he is making a blind guess. If he says, "I 'believe' there are no gods" he is still making a blind guess...but disguising the fact that he is doing so by calling it a "belief."

So, you have no beliefs? You live your live according to a series of blind guesses? Also, you just said in post #66 above that “belief” and “guess” aren’t synonymous. So, how are they different?

Keep going. 😏

Correct, I have no beliefs. I do make guesses, which I call guesses. I also make estimates, which I call estimates. I do not disguise what I am doing.

Enough with the nonsense questions. I've told you that when the words "believe" or "belief" are used in a discussion about whether gods exist or not...it is a disguise for a guess.

"I believe there is at least one god" IS NOTHING BUT A BLIND GUESS.  The word "believe" is used as a disguise.

"I believe there are no gods" IS NOTHING BUT A BLIND GUESS. The word "believe" is used as a disguise.
