Funny isn' t it?
Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian refugees all end up in the US despite being on the other side of the planet.
Australia? They were involved in that war too - yet they saw less than 1/10th the refugees the US did..Ditto the French - who were there first......
I guess the world just finds the US a convenient dumping ground for people they don' t want.....

The US took in about half of all refugees from the Indochina crisis, and good on you for doing it. Considering the extent of US involvement in Viet Nam compared to other countries’, it’s what you should have done.

Boru And despite your proximity - your country took in 1/100th of what the US did.......
And it wasn' t a US war - we just got sucked in by our "allies".....(who bailed - leaving us holding the bag)

Yes. As everybody knows, these refugees aren't intelligent beings capable of exercising some choice in where they end up. How silly of us.

And your country’s peak troop level in Viet Nam was 1000 times ours, so it’s fair to say that we took in ten times the refugees we were obliged to.

We invited refugees from laos because they served in combat, for us. I grew up with those guys. They're not faceless browns from elsewhere who got dumped on the us. Try to screw your head on right Biker.

Along this winding road of a thread I have asked two questions that really should have simple answers. I still don't know the answers. I'm not talking morality...I am talking about what are the laws - the rules that govern the topic of refugees.
Who is the US responsible to take in?
As has been alleged, is every country required to take in refugees? And if they are, who is doing the requiring? I guess that sort of makes it three questions.
I worked for an organization who helped resettle refugees from all over the world. During the time I was there, most were coming from Africa. But this was a charity, not a government agency so I didn't really become educated on laws and such but instead on the intent and focus of that particular organization.
I am honestly curious. And some of you I see as being pretty smart about a lot of things.

That’ll do to go on with. Most of it seems to be governed under The Immigration and Nationality Act, along with treaties the US is signatory to.

What we do, is completely ignore all of that whenever it suits us, in the process denying equal protection to persons in us jurisdiction.
Rights for me, privileges for thee. More like suggestions...really.
Then, people have the audacity to complain that the us is just too generous, taking in too many immigrants, grifting off we the people. A dumping ground and shangri-la..simultaneously. In mere reality, the people trying to come here are treated like shit, and even so..they still come...and if or when they ever do get here - they're productive as all hell. If we need to empty out the lifeboats to make room for real americans, I know some treasonous natives we could toss over the side.

Yes, and yes.
Quote:And also, why is it that the US is the only country in the world where people can live?
It isn't, but it sure beats a shithole. If you're uncomfortable with their arguments for leaving a shithole for the us..imagine how silly you must think it would be to flee from one shithole directly into another?
Quote:If they are going to die in Haiti, as they claim, they can always stay in Mexico or some of the Southern countries, but no. It's always the USA or death.
I mean forget about Biden, there is obviously an enormous crisis happening in Mexico when people would rather die than live there.
They want to live. For some strange reason, people looking to the us for help don't tend to imagine it'll kill them. Our pr is better than the reality, here. We're intentionally shitty to immigrants, in ways we know we shouldn't be and ways we craft laws against all the while - because the fear of replacement is shared across the entire political spectrum of the us. It's pathetic.
