Who will be watching?

I only ever read parts, or the entire thing (cannot remember), of the first book.

*raises hand* I will be watching. Fuck yes! I'm so psyched. I read books 1-5, so, not the entire thing but enough I think to not be lost.

My first days on the internet, I used the name Padan because I was obsessed with the blade from Shadar Logoth almost as much as the guys who touched it. I never read any J.R.R. Tolkien. WoT was my LotR.

I HATE Wheel of Time. Stupid fuckers are always buying vowels they don’t need.

Omg. I'm such a stupid fanboy. I got triggered by your post thinking, "Tch! Nuh-uh! Show me! What words! Aes Sedai uses just the appropriate amount of vowels to make those sounds!" before I got the joke. I am a fool.

I can understand why people like books/movies like this, but they are all so derivative of Tolkien that I just can't enjoy them. When I was in my teens I devoured fantasy books, but eventually realized that none of them stood up to Tolkien and every one of them were living off of his crumbs, so I shifted away from reading fantasy.
Why is it so?

Everything is derivative. WoT isn't like the most epic series ever but I enjoyed it greatly and would recommend it and I'm excited to watch a series based on it.

I personally think that those who can't see past Tolkien are living off of his crumbs, as it were. Then again, I've never read a single word of his and I've read a ton of fantasy books. It's not the first time I've heard that criticism about fantasy as a genre. Maybe there's just something awful about Tolkien that ruins you for other authors. Or maybe those who choose to read him and feel complete enough to stop there just don't have a nuance for story execution and variation. They see orcs and addictive magic tropes and automatically think, "I'VE READ THIS ONE ALREADY!!!"

*Not directed at solely Spongebob but the critics who parrot that elitist opinion.

Tolkien was okay, never got into Jordan, but when it comes to fantasy I really fell in love with Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series.

I never picked up Goodkind. I liked Jordan, Raymond E. Feist, Roger Zelazny, David Gemmell, Elizabeth Haydon, China Miéville, Nicholas Eames, and Anne Bishop. I have a hard time picking a favourite.

So, what's a synopsis of this 'Wheel of Time' series?

I am not a big fantasy fan but do enjoy LoTR - books and movies. Hobbit - just the book...movies were overdone but I watched it because it seemed like I had to after watching LoTR multiple times.

It's sword and sorcery, medieval fantasy. In the current world, only certain women possess the ability to perform magic and they're these warrior witches called Aes Sedai. But thousands of years ago, there used to be men who could wield this power but in a fight against a great evil, this fabled wizard known as the Dragon, bound the Dark Lord in another dimension. As a result, the male half of the power was tainted, so, any men who are born gifted go crazy from exposure and use of this power. So, they were all hunted down, killed, and held captive by the Aes Sedai. Now, all these thousands of years later, the cage the Dark Lord is in is weakening. Prophecy says the Dragon will be reborn in time to face the evil once again. Except, the male part of the magic is still tainted, so, nobody knows how it ends. Will the Dragon Reborn be strong enough to withstand madness and fight for the Light?

The series focuses on the adventure of a young man who discovers he can wield magic and an Aes Sedai who believes in these old prophecies tries to help him come into his power safely so that he can fulfill his destiny to defeat the evil that threatens the world. It reminds me of Harry Potter, honestly, because this humble farm boy travels with his friends, another boy and a girl, and the early books have a lot of "friendship will help him triumph" vibe.
