Now, yes, but they had no real military whatsoever at the start of the conflict- and it was that situation which Russia believed they could exploit.

... and of course the Russians overlooked the issue of motivation.

More of a misread, insomuch as they considered it they believed that the ukranian population was overwhelmingly on their side. There's this idea that putin, serious person and master strategist, taking personal control of the fsb made it one of the more competent arms of the russian regime. Not so. They're just as and probably even more motivated to tell the great man what he wants to hear in spite of the realities on the ground. This, ofc, being the phrase that russia likes to use in it's "negotiation" posturing while babbling about places they don't control and can't take by force.

People have been reading it as ten dimensional chess and clever propaganda. Just like we do here with donald. Nope. It's just people lying to save their jobs and lives, and because why not. No one in country is going to fact check them.

-a followup.  In response to this strike the russian black sea fleet, which had already all but abandoned the black sea in it's exodus from sevastapol, has walled itself into harbor at novorossiysk by sinking barges and erecting physical barriers, completing it's de facto surrender of the battlespace.

Gonna make it hard to get out when the next aerial drone swarm shows up I reckon.

Well, I was referring to the motivation of the fighting troops, not the civvies.

After 15 hours of talks in Brussels, the EU summit broke up with a deal on a €90 billion loan to Ukraine.

The cash will be raised through joint borrowing between 24 of the EU’s 27 countries, but it needed all of them to agree to the plan because it’s guaranteed by the central EU long-term budget.

It's worse option than original plan of using frozen russian assets I think but that still is a positive outcome.

Russia attacks a NATO member state again.

Quote:Russian drone crashes in Türkiye's Izmit province near Istanbul amid escalation

A drone believed to be a Russian-made Orlan-10 reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle was found in a rural area of Kocaeli's Izmit district on Friday, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

According to reports, residents spotted the motionless aerial vehicle on land in the rural Cubuklubala neighborhood and notified authorities. Gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the area following the report.

The incident marks the second drone-related event in Türkiye this week, following the shootdown of an unidentified drone near Cankiri by Turkish F-16s on Monday.

The Orlan-10 is a medium-range, multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Russian firm Special Technology Center LLC in St. Petersburg. The UAV has been in service with the Russian Ministry of Defense since 2010.

The Orlan-10 is typically deployed in groups of two or three, where the first drone conducts reconnaissance at an altitude of 1-1.5 km, the second performs electronic warfare and the third serves as a transponder transmitting intelligence information to the control center.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

US intelligence: Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire, six sources familiar with US intelligence said, even as negotiators seek an end to the war that would leave Russia with far less territory.

The reports present a starkly different picture from that painted by US President Donald Trump and his Ukraine peace negotiators, who have said Mr Putin wants to end the conflict.

It's amazing, no matter how much putin says he won't, the dotards people insist he wants to.

Anybody remember the Gulf of Tonkin incident?

Quote:On 2 August 1964 there was a clash between a destroyer of the United States Navy that was collecting signals intelligence close to North Vietnamese waters, and three North Vietnamese naval vessels. On the night of 4 August, two US destroyers reported they were attacked by North Vietnamese vessels and that they were returning fire. Later investigation revealed that the 4 August attack did not happen; no North Vietnamese vessels had been present. Shortly after the events, the National Security Agency, an agency of the US Defense Department, deliberately skewed intelligence to create the impression that an attack had been carried out.

Also Iraqi soldiers threw babies out of incubators in Kuwait and had weapons of mass destruction, Gaddafi gave viagra to his soldiers to commit rapes, Assad used chemical weapons on his own people in Douma.

Any sentence which begins "US intelligence agencies say..." is very likely untrue.

You actually don't need to listen to US intel to see Putin's game plan. Anyone with half-a-brain can see that his end-game is to defeat and conquer Ukraine. Of course, "anyone with half-a-brain" probably excludes you.

Many of us are skeptical of US gov't motives and propaganda. Hell, I marched against the drum-up to war in late 2002 -- and I'm a Desert Storm vet. Didn't blind me.

Somehow you find FSB dope more credible than your own eyes. Poor little fool, you.
