Since we're on the run-up to Easter, I thought - perhaps erroneously - that this might be a subject worth chewing over. It's often been said that xtianity stands or falls on the resurrection; an event (supernatural or otherwise) that could only have happened because the character was tried and condemned by the Roman authorities. Did the Romans have any free will in the matter, given that this 'sacrifice' was supposed to be Yahweh's plan for humanity? If they did, what would have happened to a) the plan and b) xtianity as a religion if they'd either locked him up, let him off with a caution or simply ignored him altogether? Would the magic and the miracles have been enough on their own?
Actually - April 20th is MY mother's birthday - She is a real person - a wonderful woman - and deserves a celebration in her honor.
And her birthday actually falls on the same date of the month - regardless of the day which varies - and her birthday does NOT need an astrological calculation to determine when it will be =
IF you think of that alone -it points out a problem with religion.
Nevertheless - thank you - all xtians - for celebrating my mothers birthday this year. At least you can celebrate something real!

Except it's an astronomical calculation, not astrological; the first full moon after the vernal equinox.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I'm indifferent to Pilate and his gang, but would like to go back in time and kick Constantine in the nuts.

We interrupt this regularly scheduled thread for an important breaking story from TSN, The Sarcasm Network, I am your anchor Brian37. Tonight's breaking news "What if the Romans didn't kill Jesus". What if Dorothy didn't throw that pail of water on the witch? What if Apollo didn't put a curse on Casandra? But the most burning question humanity has to face is "How many licks does it take to get to the center of Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop."
We will return you to this regularly scheduled thread after a message from Tootsie Roll and that wise old owl.

Pail, not pale.
I concur, completely. It's all mythology and fairytale. No reason not to indulge in hypotheticals, though, and I for one would love to hear what any of our resident believers think of the question. At least I would, but I can't help suspecting the thread is like garlic to them.

Yeah.
The actual crucifixion of Yeshua would be inconsequential if Constantine didn't make Christianity the state religion.
But would it really have made a difference?
As someone else stated, he would have picked another religion as the state religion. Probably Mithra worship.
Christians would be Zoroastrians and worship Mithra. We'd all still be atheists.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Great; now I gotta fix my correction, then fill in the paperwork and fix your quoting of it.
