I see this as a problem of news media all too often using religious terminology over rational consideration. Perhaps we need more separation of church and news.
I was going to say that it's bound to get better as more secular youngsters grow into the editor's job and respond to some described "miracle" with "WTF?", but news is all about money and ratings and not about being thorough and correct.

It would seem, from reading the bible, that god would rather kill or have it's minions kill. I do not see it saving that one child. Now if god helped someone find a wallet ....

Miracle can be Any amazing or wonderful occurrence, not just a metaphysical event as the religious use the word.

Miracle does get used out of religious context. Someone walking down the street with a bag of groceries, trips and falls, "It's a miracle you didn't break any eggs".
