Yes all they had to work with at the time were the most powerful and deadly hand held weapons ever devised. Maybe they should have specified bows and arrows. Not like this shit is written in stone. Throw it up for review if we want to change it right?

I shot a gun for the first time today. Went to a shooting range in the Czech Republic and fired a glock 9mm, AK47, some kind of pump action shotgun (forgot the name) and a snub nose Magnum.
Fucking awesome, the Magnum nearly ripped my fucking hand off.

Red herring and you know it. I am speaking to the usage of weaponry of that time frame and the multifaceted nature of such -- most non-city dwelling families could be expected to own a hunting rifle. As Britain invested in the economies of it's colonies, the fledgling States had enough of an economic engine to keep relatively up to date with regards to weaponry.
However, I reiterate, that the usage, form factor, capabilities and mass production of weapons has far outstripped the original environment in which the Right to Bear Arms was envisioned.
Now, I'm not being anti-firearm as I am being pro-context. And the context is certainly different between then and now.
And yes, perhaps it is time to review it. However, noting the muddled court rulings over time, a clear policy looks elusive.

I'm only pointing out that yester-years super-weapons were just as terrible in the minds of our ancestors as our own are today. Imagining that the founding fathers somehow failed to address our situation because they could not have known how advanced our weapons would become is stretching credibility. The weapons they were referring to were the assault rifles of the day. It would probably be better to say that we, as a culture (and yes I know not all of us) have grown less attached to guns as our need for them has diminished. A right to rebellion, a right to bear arms. These people loved guns.
I'm not arguing against reform, massive reform. I just can't help but point out that these people were, in many ways, fucking savages.

.357?
Or .44?
And how could you go shooting in the Czech Republic and not shoot a CZ?

I'm not certain the founding Fathers envisioned the mass production of small, concealable weapons dedicated to anti-Human actions when all they had to work with was large hunting rifles of many purposes.
And I'm reasonably certain they wanted citizens to have access to any arms the government was able to field, so as to be able to maintain a balance between civilian & government strength of force. Aside from defense of the nation, that was the entire point to the 2nd Amendment.

In case you're wondering,my uncompromising attitude to guns is due to my army training and experience.
I am familiar with: (have fired, stripped down and assembled) the following weapons:
7.62 SLR (semi automatic)
Armalite
F1 sub machine gun
M60 machine gun; saw a cook off. (round gets stuck in the hot barrel, and explodes)
M58 machine gun
Bren gun
Two types of grenade. One was the chocolate square type from WW2 (manual prime, treated with maximum respect)
Karl Gustav anti -tank (bazooka)
I doubt many civilians are aware of just how many soldiers are killed by the friendly fire of their highly trained mates.
The very thought of civilians with basic hand guns is scary enough. With semi and full automatic is downright terrifying. Most of 'em are untrained in gun safety AND fucking STOOPID. EG like that moron in the US who recently blew his dick off with his girlfriend's cute little pink pistol. PINK? Fuck me,a gun is not a fucking fashion accessory!
Contrary to NRMA propaganda,in the US,most gun deaths are NOT caused by criminals, but by people known to the victim. I would not trust ME or ANYONE I know with a firearm at home.
I love guns and love firing them,ON A RANGE. Off range they are kept UNLOADED, breech removed, in secure lockers, not loaded, in a bedside drawer or in a closet.. My weapon of choice:Armalite,a joy to fire.
PS. the great fantasy of far too many US gun owners is how they would fare against ta modern army,or police force if push came to shove. A bunch of poorly organised and led 35,40, 50 year old civilians, even veterans, is no match for highly trained, organised and professionally led 20 year old jarheads. Hoorah!

Just so. Far too often, the gun faction wants to afford the Founding Fathers some level of prescience which would act as a defense to go everywhere carrying concealed. 'Twasn't so.
At least we have put to rest the matter that there are no CCWs necessary in Arizona. Amazing how difficult that was. Common sense is not inalienable, I suppose.
