Atheists who announce "I'm good without god"
#31
RE: Atheists who announce "I'm good without god"
Jesus sometimes taught that much of the law of God could be summarized in the command to "love your neighbor as yourself." He taught that you should "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

But people must realize that Jesus's ethical teachings were delivered in a decidedly apocalyptic form. The reasoning behind his moral teaching is not the reasoning most of us use today. People today think that we should live ethically for a wide variety of reasons--most of them irrelevant to Jesus--for example, so we can find the greatest self-fulfillment in life and so we can all thrive together as a society for the long haul. Jesus did not teach his ethics so that society could thrive for the long haul. For Jesus, there was not going to be a long haul. The end was coming soon, and people needed to prepare for it. Anyone who chose not to do so would be destroyed when the Son of Man arrived in judgment from heaven.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Personally, I go with the question...

"Is it your claim that you have no morals of your own?"

It doesn't hurt to point out that you don't need clergy to know what's not moral. Some theists have never considered it any other way.

Sure it is.  I already know that I’m good without a religion.   I’d only say I am good without god if I am trying to get religious people to treat me as human and moral because they control a lot of social power.

You do what works for you, and maybe ease up on the sweeping generalizations.

All too accurate all too often.

If you wanna address that argument then bring it to them but to use that as your motivation is low rent.

god is everywhere, everybody is god. if you're good without everybody you're a loner. you could feel better thinking god doesn't exist because it's easier to quit believing in something outdated. the best god is the leading brain (scientific brain #1 brain in the world)

the original god doesn't exist and so it's an outdated god that you could feel better without for sure but you fail by a lot because it would mean you don't believe in our species

I answered the question of the OP and probably shouldn't have bothered trying to clarify my thinking in response to your comment.  I'm aware that thinking in terms of in- and out-groups is one of a number of ways to frame this situation.  I'm gonna write what I'm gonna write, though.  If I get dinged for generalizing, that's my broom to drag, I guess.

At work.

Hello the thread!

When such questions come up in thd conversations I'm having then I give the qualifying identifier of "Non-theist".

As I find it the best fit for my current mental state.

When asked for more details, then I expand on the definition.

Much cheers

Religious folks think it's perfectly acceptable to:
  • openly pray for people.
  • tell you that they are going to pray with you
  • assume everyone believes in god just because they do
  • assume everyone is supposed to believe in god just because they do
  • openly shun you when they find out you don't believe in god
  • make faces of disgust when they are told you don't believe in god
  • openly mock you for not believing in their god
  • stand on a corner with a bible, preaching to passersby
  • openly thank god for survivors of a tragedy, while not blaming god for that tragedy
  • believe in a white jesus even though he supposedly comes from a region where white people are not indigenous to
  • teach young children that the flood was a beautiful story about Noah's Arc.
  • indoctrinate young children into believing their brand of bullshit
I could go on but I'll stop there because I think you get the point. I don't see atheists lowering themselves to these levels, yet the religious participate in the above activities on a daily basis. You know what else is low rent? Trying to silence atheists with guilt and manipulation simply because they don't subscribe to a god or gods.

You know what else is low rent? Trying to send a message that atheists are somehow bad or evil because they rightfully speak up about their atheism.

Say that in English.

It seems that I mostly seem to see this in response to the moral argument for God. This type of response would indicate that they don't understand the moral argument; hence the incorrect response.

As a slogan, I think it's effective. Where it leads to, however, may not be.

You can interpret it two ways. One, as saying that you can be good without the belief in God, but that's a rather pointless argument, and a sophisticated theist might point out that you can be good because of God without necessarily believing in God. Second, it could mean that goodness doesn't depend upon God. That's a more sophisticated argument, but one that leads immediately into difficulty, as there obviously is goodness in the world, so the atheist is then tasked with explaining that fact independent of God, which is not a small order.

So, I don't personally use the slogan, nor do I think it's the best starting point for a discussion about God and morality.
