They check in on millions of kids each year. If your kid shows up with a pistol at school..they don't even need to check in, they already know you fucked up. They -will- be checking in though, on account of that..so..you know, hide your drugs. Probably outta clean the kitchen too.

It does, though...I'm not sure what about this you think is hypothetical. CPS has been ramping up how many check in it does even though the number of kids deemed victims of abuse or neglect is going down. If they deem your house unsafe or you abusive..they won't leave the kids in your custody. If they see neglect or an unsafe condition that they don't feel they can act on, they're gonna make a report and referral about it..you'll be seeing them again.
The US is not the wild west. Even the wild west wasn't the wild west (they had stricter gun laws, lol). Any discussion of our gun laws and how to improve our gun laws has to begin at that point, rooted in reality.

Well - ish. Most mass murderers would ping on somebodies radar if we had comprehensive mental health care...ofc, with six out of ten gun deaths being suicide...comprehensive mental healthcare would reduce a whole lot more gun death than finding the crazies would.
Don't need to get rid of the 2nd for that.
There are alot of things we could do to find the crazies, though. Oddly enough (or right on cue, depending), we're defunding and dismantling that too.

Most mass murderers are not mentally ill so they would not . But do agree the mentally ill need more help .

They can be, but those guys, sane or not, exhibit patterns of behavior that can signal their intentions, and particularly in the weeks beforehand the fall prey to leakage. Discussing the event, floating the idea, talking about other mass shootings and how they would have done things differently, etc.
Usually, this just isn't reported to law enforcement or counselors, and the shooters don;t have any routine contact and relationship with the sorts of sympathetic ears that might recognize it and..either steer them to a more healthy mindset, or report it to authorities themselves.
Wouldn;t catch them all, but well never catch them all. Still - if we're looking at ways to reduce gun deaths. Mental health holds the biggest chunk of the gun death pie.
