Why do you imagine this to be the case, and what are they supposed to be training them to do, and are we really going to stick with the idea that some specific misbehavior might be related to how we train a person? Might it be possible for us to have police, and police who don't mace nine year olds, if we train police some other way, for example?

Suppose you were ask a prospective cop that question. If they stop and think about it, there’s at least a possibility that they would mace a child. That should be enough to preclude them from a job in law enforcement.

Edit: The city of Rochester have drafted legislation that would prohibit the use of chemical irritants on minors. I’m sure the legislators are well intentioned, but that’s not enough - it doesn’t address the actual problem.

If they have to stop and think about it, it implies that they’re thinking “yes” could be a valid answer. If they think it’s a valid answer, especially for something as beyond the pale as macing a child, they shouldn’t be trusted with partaking in the monopoly of force. That’s literally one of the questions (admittedly, it was more throwing acid in a kid’s face, but the principle is much the same) O’Brien gave to Winston when he was quizzing him for his fitness for the resistance, and played back to torment him once he revealed his true colors.

If just telling them the words you think they want to hear is simply a good qualification, this opens it up to any psychopath willing to manipulate the system. That’s how they get ahead.

And you wonder why people read your posts and think you’re okaying macing kids.
