Pope Benedict is not resting in peace as his estate is being sued by victims of Church sexual abuse seeking truth and justice set against a damning report commissioned by the Church itself that found Ratzinger failed to act on clergy abusers while Archbishop of Munich.
Quote:A victim of abuse demands a total of 350,000 euros from the Archdiocese and the heirs of the deceased Pope Benedict XVI This was confirmed by the man’s lawyer, Andreas Schulz, of the German Press Agency.
Previously, “Correctiv”, Bavarian radio and “Die Zeit” reported on the claim and quoted from a corresponding brief. The plaintiff is demanding 300,000 euros from the archbishopric and 50,000 euros in compensation from the heirs of the pope emeritus who died on New Year’s Eve. According to a spokeswoman, the court put the value in dispute in the process at 362,000 euros a little higher.
The man states that almost 30 years ago in the parsonage in Garching an der Alz in Upper Bavaria, about the convicted repeat offender priest H. to have been abused. “The plaintiff was thus deprived of his happiness in life, thrown off the course of life and therefore sought refuge in drugs and alcohol with all its consequences for his professional life,” says Schulz’s letter, according to “Correctiv”, BR and “Zeit”.
Benedict XVI, then still a cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1986, helped ensure that the convicted priest was reinstated in a congregation. This made it possible for Priest H. to abuse the current plaintiff at the time, according to the argument.
Not an isolated case
The Traunstein trial is not the only current case that could cost the church dearly: a former altar boy filed a lawsuit for pain and suffering before the Cologne district court, which was about a much higher sum, namely around 750,000 euros – and thus much more than what the church has been paying abuse victims to date.
For comparison: A commission set up by the Catholic Church in Germany has so far approved more than 40 million euros in so-called voluntary recognition benefits for victims of sexual abuse. According to the Independent Commission for Recognition Services (UKA), it was almost 13 million euros in 2021 and around 28 million in 2022.
In 143 cases, sums of more than 50,000 euros were awarded. In 24 cases it was even more than 100,000 euros.

Let's see what the scum has been doing lately....
‘Red flags everywhere’: high court in Australia asks Catholic church why it didn’t investigate priest’s abuse 50 years ago
The high court has pressed the Catholic church to explain why it didn’t have an adequate opportunity 50 years ago to investigate the extent of a priest’s abuse of children, given there were “red flags everywhere” about his crimes.
The court on Thursday began hearing a key case about a legal tactic now routinely being employed by the church and other institutions to permanently shield themselves from abuse survivors’ civil claims for compensation.
The approach has infuriated survivors and their advocates, who say the church is now effectively using the passage of time to avoid trial, despite the fact the church systemically and deliberately concealed abuse for decades in dioceses across Australia.

Baptist official in Louisiana arrested on sex crime charges
A prominent Louisiana Baptist leader in the central Louisiana area has been arrested, law enforcement said.
Daryl Stagg, 60, of Pollock, was arrested on Thursday and is being held at the Grant Parish Detention Center in Colfax.
Stagg has been charged with felonies: three counts each of oral sexual battery, first degree rape, aggravated crimes against nature and indecent behavior with juveniles.
Bond has been set at $500,000. He remains in jail at this time.
The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office said that there will be a press conference on Monday to discuss a recent investigation involving sex crimes with young children as victims.

The Texas Nuns and the Church’s Cone of Silence
For those who haven’t been following the story, the dispute between Fort Worth Bishop Michael Olson and the Discalced Carmelite nuns of the Monastery of the Most Holy Trinity in Arlington — led by their prioress Mother Teresa Agnes of Jesus Crucified Gerlach, O.C.D. — has continued to escalate.
Today’s revelation included two photographs provided by the diocese that were allegedly “taken by a confidential informant in the monastery. They show cluttered tables covered with scores of pill bottles, baggies, vape cartridges and what appears to be a bong. A crucifix is seen on one table littered with bottles.” This new information provides the first significant challenge to a narrative that has, until now, been overwhelmingly one-sided.
This story became widespread following a May 16 statement from the diocese saying that Bishop Olson received a report in April alleging that Gerlach had engaged in sexual behavior with a priest from outside the diocese, violating her vow of chastity. The statement also indicated that the superiors of the priest (whose name has not been made public) were notified. The diocese responded to the allegations against Gerlach by initiating an ecclesiastical investigation into the matter.

Abuse claims and outrage mount as Jesuit order and church in Bolivia undergo a tectonic shake
Revelations of rampant sexual abuse by deceased Jesuit Fr. Alfonso Pedrajas have prompted dozens of people in Bolivia to come forward with similar accusations of atrocities in the South American country, where the Catholic Church confronts a reckoning over the criminal acts of pedophile priests.
An investigation by Bolivian newspaper Página Siete found more than 170 victims of clerical sexual abuse being raised since early May, when the Spanish newspaper El País published its exposé into Pedrajas -- a Spanish Jesuit who kept a record of his abuse of children by writing a diary.

A Roman Catholic bishop tried to find work at an overseas charity for a disgraced priest despite knowing he was a registered sex offender
Bishop Byrne tried to get Father A work with an overseas charity which works with vulnerable people, giving few details of his friend’s offending history and saying that he was subject to sex offenders’ register requirements for only a few more months.
The charity refused to appoint him.
Bishop Byrne also ignored safeguarding issues about Canon Michael McCoy, whom he promoted to be cathedral dean, despite there being concerns about his behaviour dating back to 1996, the report said.
The concerns included him offering young people foreign holidays and providing them with alcohol despite them being underage.
Former lay employees and clergy gave clear accounts that Bishop Byrne was notified about Fr McCoy’s “significant history”, including an “in-person” hand-over from his predecessor in 2019.
Nevertheless, Bishop Bryne indicated he wanted to go ahead with the appointment.
The report said it could not say whether Fr McCoy committed offences, but he “displayed a clear pattern of grooming behaviour over the years”.
He killed himself after Northumbria Police informed him that an investigation into historic abuse allegations was to begin.

One dirty dozen after the other - multiplied by the infinite dirty dozens all over the world in the churches.
Quote:Another French bishop is accused of sexual abuse; he's the twelfth French bishop to be accused of abuse in the past year
Bishop Georges Colomb, head of the Catholic Diocese of La Rochelle in southwestern France the past seven years, has been accused of sexually assaulting a young adult male in 2013 when the prelate was the superior general of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP).
According to Nicolas' testimony, Colomb invited the young man to his apartment at MEP headquarters on rue de Bac in central Paris and offered him a massage before assaulting him. The victim says he reported the incident to Reithinger, who denies this.
Archbishop Pascal Wintzer of Poitiers, the metropolitan of the territory that includes La Rochelle as a suffragan diocese, confirmed that Bishop Colomb is also facing a canonical investigation in addition to the state judicial inquiry.
In recent months, Bishop Colomb's name has been linked in various ways to other sexual abuse cases. Most serious is an allegation that when he was MEP superior general he put Aymeric de Salvert – a priest who was expelled from Japan in 2011 for having a consensual sexual relationship with another adult man – in charge of the missionary society's seminarians and young volunteers.
Bishop Colomb also caused controversy in an interview with French Catholic Radio (RCF) last November when he seemed to make light of abuse charges against Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, the retired archbishop of Bordeaux.
"Cardinal Ricard was a 35-year-old priest in Bordeaux who kissed a 14-year-old girl," he declared. "There was no rape. He didn't even take her clothes off. He didn't undress her. He just kissed her," the bishop said.

A New Orleans priest confessed to abusing children. He returned to work and was never charged
Three days after the Feast of All Saints in 1999, Lawrence Hecker confessed to his superiors at the archdiocese of New Orleans that he had either sexually molested or otherwise shared a bed with multiple teenagers whom he met through his work as a Roman Catholic priest.
The roughly 15-year period, beginning in the mid-1960s, during which the admitted conduct unfolded “was a time of great change in the world and in the church, and I succumbed to its zeitgeist”, Hecker said in a two-page statement which he gave to local church authorities serving a region with about a half-million Catholics. “It was a time when I neglected spiritual direction, confession and most daily prayer.”
Hecker’s admission – less than two months after he had been chosen to receive the honorary title of “monsignor” – followed the decision of one of his victims to come forward to the archdiocese. The organization responded by sending Hecker to an out-of-state psychiatric treatment facility which diagnosed him as a pedophile who rationalized, justified and took “little responsibility for his behavior”.
The facility also determined that Hecker – despite the vow of celibacy that Catholic clerics take – had previously engaged in a sexual encounter with a grown man who had an unspecified mental disability and to whom the priest was ministering. It recommended that the archdiocese prohibit Hecker from working with children, adolescents or other “particularly vulnerable” people.
Hecker, however, did not stop working until the church allowed him to retire in 2002. That year, the archdiocese of Boston had been exposed as having covered up the widespread sexual abuse of children by its clerics, setting off a scandal resulting in worldwide church reforms, including promises of transparency for the sake of protecting minors and attaining justice for molestation victims.
Law enforcement authorities have never charged Hecker – now 91 years old – with a crime, even though the number of his accusers has only grown with the passage of time.
Despite openness policies that the Catholic church implemented after the 2002 scandal in Boston, New Orleans’s archdiocese did not publicly acknowledge that Hecker was a predator until 2018. That year, the archdiocese released a list of dozens of priests and deacons whom it considered to be strongly suspected of sexually abusing minors – including Hecker.
The documents establish that New Orleans’s last four Catholic archbishops – the first of whom took office in the 1960s – had substantial reason to believe that Hecker was a child molester. Three stayed silent, and the current one waited several years before acknowledging that Hecker preyed on children.

Oakland Catholic Diocese files motion to keep names of accused child sex abusers secret
The Catholic Diocese of Oakland is trying to keep the names of priests who abused children a secret. They filed that motion in a federal bankruptcy court as the diocese faces hundreds of new lawsuits. A state law gave survivors of sexual abuse by clergy until this past Dec. 31 to file lawsuits, no matter how long ago it happened. So many new claims came in, it drove the diocese to bankruptcy.
But survivors of clergy sexual abuse who were there for the hearing Tuesday, pointed out that Oakland Bishop Michael Barber - despite claims of transparency and concern for victims - has failed to release important information, even on recent cases.
Dan McNevin from the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests told the I-Team's Dan Noyes, "Not one memo has gone out to the pressures of Oakland saying, hey, Father, so and so has been accused. And that means that there's been no outreach, so this it's all a sham."
Survivors attorney, Rick Simons, added: "They give lip service to that but when it comes time to actually take actions to be transparent in their words, they're as transparent as a brick wall."

'Church seems less safe' says bishop after abuse panel sacked
A senior Church of England bishop responsible for safeguarding has told the BBC she does not "entirely trust the church" on tackling abuse.
The Bishop of Birkenhead, the Right Reverend Julie Conalty spoke after the Church sacked a panel of experts overseeing its safeguarding.
She later tweeted: "Today the church seems less safe".
The Church said its relations with the two of the experts on the panel had broken down.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's World At One, Bishop Conalty, who is the Church's deputy head of safeguarding with a focus on survivor engagement, said: "I think culturally we are resistant as a church to accountability, to criticism.
"And therefore I don't entirely trust the church, even though I'm a key part of it and a leader within it, because I see the way the wind blows is always in a particular direction."
The bishop said "right at the moment it is less accountable" and "we have definitely taken a step back".

We tracked 820 suits alleging sex abuse against Catholic Church in NJ
More than 820 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by clerics, teachers and nuns were filed in New Jersey against Catholic dioceses and orders in the two year period starting Dec. 1, 2019, when the state suspended the civil statute of limitations for civil sex abuse complaints.
NorthJersey.com kept track of those cases, and reported extensively on many of the most alarming allegations, as well as the priests named most often in the suits. NorthJersey.com also compiled a database of the lawsuits, which contain allegations that span seven decades, from the 1940s through 2016. About 250 Catholic clerics have been accused of sexual abuse, including dozens never named publicly before.
Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former head of the Newark Archdiocese and one of the most powerful American prelates in the Catholic Church, has been accused of abuse in at least 10 of the suits.

Germany: Police raid Cologne Archdiocese in perjury probe
Police and prosecutors in the German city of Cologne carried out raids on properties belonging to the local Catholic Church archdiocese on Tuesday as a part of a probe into Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki.
The archbishop has been accused of lying in court over his knowledge of sexual abuse cases in the church. Woelki has denied the allegations.
The raids began at 8 a.m. local time with police searching four properties in Cologne as well as one property each in Kassel and the town of Lohfelden in Hesse. Around 30 police officers were involved in the raids.
Police also raided the premises of the IT company that supplies the email service for the archdiocese.
The searches were met with cooperation, with Woelki himself opening the door to the police at the archbishop's residence, public broadcaster WDR reported.
The case revolves around the promotion of a priest to a high position in the city of Düsseldorf who has been accused of numerous counts of sexual abuse against minors.
Woelki said he had only known about the abuse cases since last year. However, a former employee said she had drawn up a list of abusers for Woelki in 2015 but "that didn't interest the cardinal at all."

42 names added to list of Baltimore Archdiocese employees accused of sex abuse
The Archdiocese of Baltimore added 42 names to its list of those accused of child sexual abuse, but some survivors told WJZ the church should have made them public long ago.
It is one of the biggest expansions of the list since the archdiocese began publishing it 21 years ago.
"They had to be forced into revealing these names by the Attorney General and by supporters and by the press," Lorenz said. "All three combined have made them so embarrassed that they had to publish these names."
"All of this is simply rubbing salt into the wound," Lorenz said. "And it really rubs it deep when they sit there and try to claim a victory for doing this, 'Look how great we are for publishing 42 names.'"
