Americans Unite - Behind Cold-Blooded Murderer

Most Americans will agree that our country is more divided now than at any time since the Civil War. Yet now, the overwhelming majority of Americans (close to 90%) across all political persuasions are on the same side regarding a current event.

I've been surprised to see no comment on it here but most everyone has surely heard of the recent gunning down of a healthcare CEO in New York in an execution-style murder. The 50-year old victim was married with two children. He was described as a "wonderful guy" by those who knew him personally. His wife called him a "loving husband and father who will be dearly missed." And just shy of 90% of posters on social media are cheering his murder and praising the gunman.

I'm sure everyone here knows why. The victim was head of the worst health insurance company in the country, rejecting over 30% of claims. It's pretty hard to muster up tears for a guy making tens of millions of dollars in bonuses while thousands of families go broke trying to pay medical bills. But what a way for Americans of all stripes to come together. Maybe its perversely fitting that a country with more guns than people unites over a shooting - on the side of the shooter.

The United States really is an ill country. People so loathe the status quo that they voted in a president with no morals, a laundry list of crimes and obvious signs of dementia. Now, they celebrate a high-profile murder.

When I first learned that many Trump voters in 2016 had twice voted for Obama, I was dumbfounded. What could someone who saw something in good in Obama possibly see good in Trump? Than I learned that many Trump voters say they would have voted for Bernie Sanders. Now this celebration of the murder. It's starting to make sense to me now now. Or more accurately, I'm starting to understand it. People are desperate for change. Any change. The more radical, the better. I wish the democratic leadership had seen it. I fear that this country is a powder keg getting ready to explode.

I saw hundreds of Tweets about this yesterday. Some were along the lines of "he had it coming." Others were saying something like "We should never be glad for murder, even if he had it coming."

The ONLY Tweet I saw which said "The murdered man was a nice guy, I'm sorry he's gone" came from ... Tim Walz. 

It showed pretty clearly the divide between our rulers and the people of the country. EVERYBODY thinks US health insurance is terrible. EVERYBODY who's gotten sick in a civilized country knows it could be a million times better. 

But we just had a big election, and neither side addressed the issue. It's a passionate issue that one side could win on, but neither party cares. The politicians are with the CEOs, not with you.

There are also reports that his wife stated he (the man that was shot) had received threats lately.  To someone, what happened was not a surprise.

Empty rhetoric...

A country duped into believing endemic private gun ownership is not just an alienable right, but essential to personal safety,  is bound to suffer the consequences. 

A country duped into believing any social policies designed to provide essential health care for all it's citizens, is inherently unjust, is bound to suffer the consequences. 

Try and think beyond facile soundbites, morality is subjective, but it is an objective fact that having the (2nd?) highest rate of private gun ownership in the world, and having one of the highest rates of gun deaths in the world, is not merely a coincidence. Blithely blaming moral apathy rather misses the point.

Just as having the largest GDP in the world, and failing to provide essential health care for all your citizens, indeed failing to provide any for may of them, suggests your economic model is focused on the wrong things.

If any presidential candidate suggested nationalising health care, to provide for everyone, and introducing strict gun ownership laws to help reduce violent crime, guess what the reaction would be.

Yet there are plenty of countries that have done both, and their citizens are the better for it.
