There is -always- the chance of reasonable doubt. Doesn't seem to stop the state from prosecuting, and losing cases. If you're worried about a lynch mob you move the trial...you don't decline to take it to trial.....and let me repeat; a trial was a way for the officer to clear his name, to be out from under this thing. He didn't get that, he's been dicked here as well.

If I shoot a white kid and there are witnesses that corroborate my story I don't go to trial. The only reason this went to a grand jury is because Michael Brown is black.

Unless there are witnesses that -do not- corroborate your story..and in this case, there were. I'd say that -part- of the reason it -only- went to grand jury is that he's black...and the other part I've already mentioned. The state closed ranks (in a mystifying display of out-of-character behavior..were it not for the shield on the mans chest) after having already come under fire. Imagine that you shot a cop. Reverse those roles. How does that play out in your head?

That's why police generally aren't indicted for shooting suspects and people resisting arrest. They can kill people in a variety of circumstances that would be murder if they were not acting as police.
The grand jury was indeed because of the political uproar concerning Wilson's shooting Brown. It was the prosecutor's CYA attempt. And in fairness, with the evidence released to the public, it's a lot more transparent than a closed police investigation which is what we usually get.

This is why is isn't fair to compare this grand jury with other grand juries. This is a special circumstance.

Would you have preferred the closed police investigation? Don't you think that might be part of the problem to begin with? I appreciate that they at least went grand jury..I just fail to see why they didn't do it right...if they were going to go through the trouble at all.

By this standard the cop I threw my wallet at had the right to shoot me.
Wilson's initial verbal communication set the tone to how things went down. He also did that in seated position at a tactical disadvantage which no cop would do if they were afraid of someone. I believe Brown's friend when he said he cussed them out. It makes much more sense to me that Wilson grabbed at Brown because he saw the cigars without thinking about how that would lead to what it did.
Being in a position of authority does not mean you can treat people like shit when you approach them. Wilson caused this, and this isn't just about this one case. This is about HOW social conditioning lead to bad thought processes.
