If we're talking about garbage men and cashiers, sure, but I don't think that applies to the examples I gave. I think most Americans who are pilots and hairdressers are those things because they have an interest in the field... and they enjoy that type of stuff.
Actually, being in school for cosmetology, myself, I could argue the fact that it's not something I ever longed or desired to do. At age 44, I am the oldest student in my class and in the school, at present. Whenever we get new students in the class and we are asked why we wanted to do this, my answer has and will always be:
I picked this because I can get through school in a fair amount of time and after being a stay at hom mom for 20 years, I have no marketable job skills and needed something to do. When I started this, I had no idea which field would appeal to me the most. I've been through skin care and nail care and hair coloring. I still have to finish out texturizing and have two more curriculums to go through which are hair design principles and then finally hair cutting. I still have no idea as to what I'll really want to do once I get my license and I graduate.
I could additionally say that my two boys and my fiancee want me to cut their hair. My youngest daughter will, in the next two years, be attending high school, which means homecoming and prom. If I can do her hair, makeup and nails free of charge, it will save me a ton of money.
Another student got into the school because she has three daughters of mixed heritage and she needed to learn how to do their hair.
Different reasons and neither one of us have done this because it's what we've always longed to do.
