RE: When someone knocks on your front door when you're not expecting anyone.

I always answer the door; I don't want to give a potential and possibly armed burglar the impression that I'm not home. The outer door is a metal security door that stays locked.
I get a lot of knockers for many odd reasons - one time a woman knocked at 9:45pm because she found a fledgling bird on the ground near my door. An Uber Eats driver knocked last week at 7:30pm (way after dark) because she was on the wrong street. And there are loads of kids in the neighborhood that knock and ask my kid to come out and play but that's mainly in the summer when the days are long.
The religious nutters are efficiently dispatched with "I'm an atheist".
