Least/Most Religious States
Hello All,

I am new to the forums but am loving what I see so far! So here goes with my first thread:

A Gallup Poll done in 2008 shows which states are the "most and least religious". Essentially pollers asked people the question"Does religion play an important role in your life?". Results are as follows reading from most to least religious (the percentage of people who answered "yes"):

• Mississippi: 85%
• Alabama: 82%
• South Carolina: 80%
• Tennessee: 79%
• Louisiana: 78%
• Arkansas: 78%
• Georgia: 76%
• North Carolina: 76%
• Oklahoma: 75%
• Kentucky: 74%
• Texas: 74%
• West Virginia: 71%
• Kansas: 70%
• Utah: 69%
• Missouri: 68%
• Virginia: 68%
• South Dakota: 68%
• North Dakota: 68%
• Indiana: 68%
• Nebraska: 67%
• New Mexico: 66%
• Pennsylvania: 65%
• Florida: 65%
• Maryland: 65%
• Ohio: 65%
• Iowa: 64%
• Minnesota: 64%
• Illinois: 64%
• Michigan: 64%
• Delaware: 61%
• Wisconsin: 61%
• District of Columbia: 61%
• Idaho: 61%
• Arizona: 61%
• New Jersey: 60%
• Wyoming: 58%
• Colorado: 57%
• Hawaii: 57%
• California: 57%
• Montana: 56%
• New York: 56%
• Connecticut: 55%
• Nevada: 54%
• Rhode Island: 53%
• Oregon: 53%
• Washington: 52%

My home state of MA made a strong showing. I am lucky enough to live on an island of blue in the sea of red, so to speak.

How did your state do? Any insights as to why it ranked higher or lower?

I'm surprised that Massachusetts shows up so low on the list. It is a very Irish Catholic state and is the root of American Puritanism. That being said, Catholicism did very little for this state and the same can be said for Puritanism. Perhaps murder and child rape tend to make the religiousness of a region plummet.

Did you post an introduction thread? Kichi will get you if you didn't. Tongue

Well if you live in any other industrialized country in the world, with the exception of Turkey, you are less religious than us! So congrats!

No problem. A lot of people miss that suggestion when they first get here. We tend to trust people's intentions to stay more when the introduce themselves.

I'm suprised Alaska is so low, but maybe that's just a personal mental block stemming from only knowing of 1 Alaskan, Sarah Palin.

I'm guessing Michigan is only as low as it is because of the bigger cities like Detroit and Flint. A lot of the smaller towns are super religious. I'm also surprised that Indiana is as low as it is. My parents live there and it is very religious.
