Does your family know that you are an atheist?

RE: Does your family know that you are an atheist?
Well what little of them remain definitely know. My oldest brother is an atheist [completely contradicting the claim by the religious that there are no atheists in foxholes], and my younger older brother is agnostic. Now, as far as my foster family goes [the only thing I have towards having actual parents and whatnot], no. I haven't told them much of anything about my lack of religious beliefs. Probably never will, either.

my wife and i are both athiest, but none of my family knows i am. my dad and step mom are super religous and my mom an grandma are both religous, they all found heyzues through AA(alcholics anon). so me telling them wouldnt help anything, very envious of those who are so open with their views with thier family.

I haven't yet. I don't think I ever would because they've invested so much time and money into my education to prevent me from becoming one (homeschooled). I'm also employed in a fairly high ranking position in a large church so I can't really have it getting out that I'm not religious.

Been lurking for 8 months or so.

Just my fiance, and she's sort of deist bordering on atheist. I am first generation American Arab born in the US and am from a family that's Greek Orthodox Christian on one side and Catholic on the other so it's difficult and I will likely not tell anyone unless specifically asked. Mother and grandmother are Catholic and all about Jesus (though my mother has said flat out she thinks organized religion is bad in general). Brother, I'm not sure what he is anymore and I tested the waters with him discovering his disbelief of evolution so I don't think I can get much further with him.

Father, his (large) family are all very Greek-Orthodox Christian and part of their churches and communities. Ultimately I'm fine with all of this. I've flat out told some people I'm not religious at all, but most people don't grasp that that means you're atheist.

Of course, I primarily don't want to upset anyone so I'm not outgoing about it, nor do I want to start any feuds. I get upset about it from time to time because I would love to share my thoughts with family or even some friends but just can't. It's also upsetting, now, to see how people think/feel and handle their religion and the negative (to non-religious) things it does to their train of thought.

I voted some. My mom and sister know, my dad doesn't. Dad is the religious one of our family. He and the extended family are all Mormon. At least there is no pressure from the extended family (and I do mean extended. 42 cousins extended!), they wrote me off years ago because I haven't had kids and don't plan to.

It is hard when the "others" are people that you care about. For me, its my dad. I love my dad and want him to be proud of me. Of course I care what he thinks. I know he would never do something like disown me, but I don't want him to be disappointed in me, either.

We are are part of nature, built from the same stuff as stars, planets, asteroids, and comets. Our protons and neutrons have been around since the earliest times, glued together into heavy elements of long dead ancient suns, blasted out into the universe and resculpted from diffuse interstellar dust clouds by the gentle hand of gravity. When the pattern of atoms known to be you ceases to be, the building blocks will return to the voids of space, and in a billion years or more, they may take their place in another structure so beautiful that a future mind may perceive it to be the work of a god. ~ Brian Cox

Seeing that most of my family are atheists, it was never a problem to 'come out'. My sister is something akin to a pantheist, but we enjoy talking and debating about our different points of view. My nephews (aged 3,2 and 2) probably don't understand the concept yet, but seeing that their grandmother on the parental side is highly religious, and would dearly like to indoctrinate them asap, I'm gonna make sure that I introduce them to reasoning.

Hehhe, don't mind Frods. He's just pulling your leg Wink

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
