how to live as an Atheist in a Christian family

RE: how to live as an Atheist in a Christian family
You are 19 years old, not 15. You are an adult, your Dad can't make you go to church or make you do anything else. I'd say keep looking for work, find a job and move out. Then don't talk to your parents for a good long while, they'll probably realize what assholes they have been. Your parents only have sway over you right now because you are financially dependent on them. If you stop being financially dependent then they can't tell you to do shit. Maybe they are paying for your college or something, but you have your whole life to go to college. Nowhere is there a rules book that says you have to go to college when you are right out of high school. You can become stable first and then go on your own with no help from your parents. There is no reason that you should have to put up with this type of treatment at your age.

I find that violently lashing out at random tends to keep people's minds preoccupied with something other than the fate of my eternal soul.

Become a "problem teenager." Give them something else to worry about, to get their mind off converting you.

Go Goth. Get a piercing. Get a tattoo. Kick the neighbor's dog. Develop a drinking problem. Put powdered sugar on your nostrils when you come home. Burn a cross in someone's lawn.

But by all means, have fun while you're doing it. And stay safe!

YES...absolutely agree apophenia.....

And this is a great lesson for all you youngsters....

Whenever you go to burn a cross...

SAFETY FIRST....ALWAYS!!!!!

Hang in there bro. shit can be difficult and especially with the religious nutjobs that try to run socitey. just let reason hold you up and get assertive if needed. fuck the bible. stone age bullshit. don't put up with the shit. you have one life. live it to the full. PM if you need to talk to someone. i dealt with ALOT of bible belt christian bullshit and still do though it is ALOT better now. my advice don't back down. stand strong.

This is the typical horse shit answer of a dirtbag christian: "Do whatever to get by, and just cower in fear until it's clear to live free. " What a shitty piece of advice. Seriously ... FUCK YOU!

Cin, we've had at least one member here actually get kicked out of their house - I believe at the age of 16 - because he wouldn't fake it.

I think Capn has the right of it. Put out a call to more than friends - sometimes even just acquaintances will be willing to rent you a room if you're in dire straits.

Don't try to logic them into not believing. Don't try to reason with them. Don't engage them on it. Change the subject if it comes up or tell them you won't discuss it further. Find things to do at night (like looking for a job) so they can't take you to evening services.

People who are entrenched in stupid beliefs and more willing to hold on to them than their family are impossible to deal with. I didn't speak to an aunt for over 2 years because she found out I had gotten tattoos and now couldn't be buried in a Jewish cemetery. Little did she know I was atheist and thus didn't give two fucks anyway. The resulting argument between me, her and my mom (who took my side only in that no one should be insulting her daughter) caused complete communication black out. Over some skin ink. Seriously. She still only talks to me when it conveniences her, which is partly due to her personality, and partly because I won't respect her as the supposed Jewish matriarch of the family.

Concentrate right now about getting out, then on setting up your life as best you can. If your parents don't like it, remember that to them you're going to burn in hell, and you can tell them that if they wish to see you in the meantime (between now and hell) they'll keep their opinions to themselves. And I would tell any extended family who tries to get in on it to go fuck themselves (as politely as you can). They don't have any real bearing on your life.

My mom isn't terrible, but my father makes me go to church twice a week, once to talk to this man from church who is a professor at a Christian university. He is constantly trying to engage me in debates so that he can re-convert me, though he keeps failing miserably. I am currently in Texas for a week with my uncle, who I have learned was told by my father to talk to me about all of this. They are all absolutely abusive to me, laughing at me, calling me names, and degrading me. I have been looking for a job for months, but so far to no avail, and as I have no friends with an open room, for now I have to stay at my house. I'm absolutely miserable, and I'm at my wit's end. I don't know what else to say to them, because no argument, no matter how valid, will keep them from laughing at me, and they insist upon talking about this 3 times a day. Can anyone help me?

tell them you worship the devil now and your now considering transgender surgery and if they don't get off your fucking back you'll go through with it............. also tell them the devil talks too in your dreams and you "know the real truth" then run the fuck out of the room

2 conclusions, they laugh and they aint that fuckin religous in the first place, or they are that religous they believe you and they obey your every fuckin command from now on.....trust me it fuckin works

.............welcome too atheism it's fuckin fun knowing for a flying fuckin fact your smarter than most isn't it?
