Non-creationists, show me your creations!!!

RE: Non-creationists, show me your creations!!!
Aloha fellow forum members. Here's another from my collection of vintage fedoras and Hawaiian shirts...In this one I'm wearing Resistol 4X Beaver hat that I modified to an "Indy" fedora. The hat was originally a vintage Cowboy hat but the guy I bought it from cut it down and made a fedora out of it....I didn't like the way it was styled so I took it apart, wet it down and re-stretched it to try and get the taper out of the crown...I then put an "Indy" crease in hat and let it dry out for a full day...after which I sewed on a new ribbon and reinstalled the liner....Obviously I couldn't get all the taper out of the crown which limited me to putting a C-Crown crease in the hat instead of the "Indy" Center Dent...So, here's how it turned out, not exact, but close enough given what I had to work with...

I remember being drafted into using one of these when I was a kid.

I also remember being none to thrilled with the butter that it made. If I remember correctly it was bitter. What I don't know is if that was a result of what the cow was eating in the pasture (the fresh milk seemed to be fine), or contaminates introduced during the manufacturing process. I imagine it would have been quite difficult to keep a wooden churn sterile using spring water.

Where do you get your milk, and what do you use for a churn?

Most of you know I make a garden myself. But I also enjoy photographing a lot of gardens I visit. I'll show you some pictures I just took up at the Mendocino Coast Botanical garden up in Fort Bragg, California. If anyone wants to see photos of my own garden I'd be happy to post some of those too.

Photos of the perennial garden you see when you first enter:

A bit further in there is a heath and heather garden I really like:

TO BE CONTINUED ..

Mendocino Coast Botanical photos - PART 2

Still further in there is an area where they grow a lot of fuchsias, hydrangeas and other garden plants but in a woodland, somewhat more natural setting:

The garden meets the pacific ocean at its furthest point and they've kept the plantings native here to emphasize the natural beauty of the spot:

A couple of plant families they're noted for are Dahlias and Rhododendrons. I was here this time when the Dahlias were in peak form:

Naturally I like this garden because you can bring your dogs with you. But I think it is really a great garden besides, especially for incorporating the natural bits in too.

Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden - continued.

They are also noted for their collections of Rhododendrons and Dahlias. The Dahlias were peaking while we were there this month.

One of my favorite areas contains a lot of fuchsia's and other garden plants but in a woodland area that feels more natural:

One of the best things they did here was to leave the area nearest the coast planted with just natives. The plants don't compete with the view of the pacific ocean, which is pretty great.

Boy, sorry about the mess. I was trying to do it in two installments but I got the more-than-ten-images message when I went back in to try to sort it out. Now there are loads of duplicates where I though I was replacing the middle post. Yuck.

Bitter butter, eh? I think you need to buy a bit of butter that's better than your bitter butter to make your bitter butter better. Or something?

I used double cream from... the shop. I used a glass jar and a big plastic spoon for a churn.

I put half the cream in the jar and put on the lid then shook it till it was too thick to shake. Then I took off the lid and mixed it fast with the spoon until it started to get a kinda grainy texture and bits of butter milk splashed about. Then I put the lid back on and shook it for just a few seconds till I could hear that the butter was clumped in a big lump sloshing about in buttermilk. Then I strained through some paper towels and squeezed out the buttermilk with my (clean) hands and plunged it into a bowl of ice-cold water and squeezed even more of the buttermilk out and wrapped it up in paper towels while I did the same thing with the other half of the double cream. Tada! The whole thing takes about 20 minutes. Oh, and I mixed some salt in at the end because I prefer salted butter.

Food presentation never makes sense to me. Yeah, taste does, though. In the end, it all runs to fertilizer, so why stress it? (That butter looks awesome, to me, btw!)
