I've actually invited some ladies in before. We talked about parenting and they played with my son who was 1 at the time. They were really nice people.
That sounds like a decent experience. I have given up being rude to anyone. I tried it a couple of times and it always comes across as though I am joking. I was in a snappy mode at a few christian lets say acquaintances that were openly expressing their homophobia(something which I cannot tolerate).

Homophobia.... I usually just express my disappointment.
Pro-life, anti-woman, pro-birth people make me turn into the hulk.

I came home once to find a Jesus pamphlet sitting at my door. I missed my chance for interaction. For some reason, I am alright with this.

I live in a high rise apartment building so I don't get solicitors. If people come to my door, I'm usually kind and sweet, but then, most such people are lost, or, occasionally, political volunteers. My attitude towards proselytizers is similar to Brian's, polite but firm refusal to tolerate any nonsense.

I've had a couple of ladies come up once or twice a year. They're nice, and they hand out little pamphlets. My grandmother is against them, but I forget why. I've never really had much against them. They spread the word like the bible tells them to do. They're against blood transfusion, but I'm pretty sure the part of the bible that speaks against taking blood is talking about drinking it.
I haven't mentioned I'm an atheist. I kind of got sucked back into the church soon after they started showing up, and I haven't seen them since I stopped going to church again.

I had a black guy come around, the preacher for what seemed to be an average, run-of-the-mill church. He was nattily dressed in a jacket and tie...rare for Arizona, and it was about 105 outside which makes it even more rare. He started his speech and I just said "I don't have much use for religion." However because of the heat I asked him if he'd like a bottle of water and he accepted. I invited him to step in out of the heat while I went to get it.
We chatted about the weather and the neighborhood while he drank it but he never tried to raise the jesus-subject again. Then he departed to go annoy other people, no doubt.

I used to get a lot of them. They visited me damn near every week; always early in the morning and usually on the weekend. I'd always tell them I'm not interested and be polite about it, sometimes saying "no thank you." Eventually, though, it got a little old; I mean, I wanted to sleep in. So I started asking them not to come back, and they ignored my requests.
Then, one day, I was having a bad day. I had a painful toothache that was just ruining my day, I had spent the whole night before up, writing a paper and when I opened the door for them the cat (who had yet to have been fixed) ran out. That's when I just unloaded on them. I yelled about how obnoxious they are and how stupid their religion is and I told them that it's their fault th cat got away and that if they aren't going to help me catch her, to get the fuck away from here.
They never returned.
I live on facebook. Come see me there. http://www.facebook.com/tara.rizzatto

I wish I could have seen that. What were some of the things you nailed them on and what was their response?

The JWs came around my neighborhood on Saturday; I was out walking my cat so when they knocked on my door no one answered even though the lights were on and the garage door open. MWAHAHAHA!!
If they come to my door and I'm home I tell them one of two things depending on whether I'm in a bad mood or not:
1) I'm an atheist; no, I would not like one of their fliers (the polite rebuff).
2) My dad's cousin committed suicide because his parents and siblings (my dad's aunt, uncle and cousins) shunned him, a practice taught to them by the JWs. You destroyed one life in my family, isn't that enough? Now get the fuck off my property and never come back. (the pissy rebuff - and a true story)

I once invited them in (man and daughter, about 12 years old), we discussed their beliefs for a while (they made their points and I demolished them all) after an hour or so we got onto blood transfusions... then the fun started! I pointed out that 200 years ago it was a good idea to refuse a transfusion because it would probably kill you, but now we know about blood groups and things and so it probably will save your life. They still said they were against them so I asked what they would do, if on the way home a drunk driver knocked his daughter down and she was lying in the gutter bleeding to death... would he still refuse a transfusion if he was told it would save her life? He said he would... so I just looked at him and said "You would let your own daughter die because of your out dated beliefs? You are a disgusting murdering bastard and I am ashamed to belong to the same species as you" The look on the girls face was priceless, she obviously had never thought about it in those terms before. Maybe I was cruel, but maybe I got her to think and question. (They never came back!!)
