Is anyone just happy that these two are friends, yet can disagree with each other and are not simply not a unified front of uncritical thought? Interesting discussion all around, and while I'm not at all sure who is closer to the truth, it's a fascinating debate.

Here I thought that Harris was on the other court...
Sam Harris Wrote:In my book, I argue that an honest look at the causal underpinnings of human behavior, as well as at one’s own moment-to-moment experience, reveals free will to be an illusion. (I would say the same about the conventional sense of “self,” but that requires more discussion, and it is the topic of my next book.) I also claim that this fact has consequences—good ones, for the most part—and that is another reason it is worth exploring. These guys get caught up in details and examples which have little bearing to the discussion, but what do I know of philosophy? Harris' response to Dennett was the equivalent of just giving up. Dennett is just too experienced in and knowledgeable of this area of discussion that Harris is hardly expected to be able to keep up.

I read the article. Sam wins. Dennett loses. End of story.

Yeah, only if you don't know what's going on. Harris is out of his depth here. Not unintelligent (Harris is very intelligent), but he's just factually wrong in some of his criticisms of compatibilism. It's not his area after all, and Dennett is one of the world's foremost experts on free will, so one really shouldn't be surprised.

I read free will book of sam harris and didn't find anything I don't agree with. As for Dan he as far as I know didn't say anything new. What I know so far is that Dan also thinks free will doesn't exist but it makes no difference.
