Atheists don't kill in the name of atheism.

For example the Ustase.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usta%C5%A1e

Quote:The Ustaše intended to create an ethnically "pure" Croatia, and saw the Serbs that lived in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina as their biggest obstacle. Thus, Ustaše ministers Mile Budak, Mirko Puk, and Milovan Žanić declared in May 1941 that the goal of the new Ustaše policy was an ethnically clean Croatia. The strategy to achieve their goal:[66][67]
One third of the Serbs were to be killed
One third of the Serbs were to be expelled (ethnically cleansed)
One third of the Serbs were to be forcibly converted to Catholicism

See the bold this was deffo a religious persecution on the part of the croats.

And of course throughout its history chrsitianity has persecuted the jews, with one inventive English sailor during Edward the firsts reign charging the jews for passage away from England and dumping them in tidal spur halfway between England and France then inviting them to swim the rest of the way. Jews didn't return to England until Oliver Cromwell invited them back in.
Then you have all the many and disparate sects of christianity fighting against their big rivals, other sects of christianity going back to the Goths during the roman empire, Perseution of witches and anyone else they didn't like at the time and you end up with a religion which looks a lot like the intolerant blood dripped religion that Islam looks like now.

Fun fact. The Ustase were probably the most brutal regime to be seen during the entire Second World War (and that's saying something). They were also whole heartedly supported by the Vatican at the time.

They liked to kill up close and personal as well. None of this namby pamby gas chamber business, they liked to use a specially designed knife that didn't put strain on the wrist with all the throat slashing, known as a Serb killer.

Quote:The upper part of the srbosjek was made of leather, as a sort of a glove, designed to be worn with the thumb going through the hole, so that only the blade protruded from the hand. It was a curved, 12 cm long knife with the edge on its concave side. The knife was fastened to a bowed oval copper plate, while the plate was fastened to a thick leather bangle. The blade was curved in order to make it easier to slit the throat of the victim, following the curvature of the neck. Thus, the Srbosjek knife was designed to kill as fast as possible and with as little fatigue as possible.

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

RE: Who killed more people Atheists or Christians?
I was pretty dumbfounded when I actually did my own studies on history. For one, the Holocaust made a hell of a lot more sense to me.

“My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a
fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded
by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and
summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest
not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian
and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord
at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the
Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight
against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with
deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact
that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As
a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have
the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is
anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is
the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty
to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and
work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only
for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning
and see these men standing in their queues and look into their
pinched faces, then I believe I would be Christian, but a very
devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two
thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people
are plundered and exposed.”

[Adolf Hitler, speech in Munich on April 12, 1922, countering a
political opponent, Count Lerchenfeld, who opposed antisemitism on
his personal Christian feelings. Published in "My New Order", quoted
in Freethought Today April 1990]

Growing up in the middle of the Bible belt and attending Christian private and Christian public schools-- I didn't learn Jack shit. Most certainly about who Hitler really was. All I was taught was that he was a painter and got denied to an Art school by some Jews, that he was Jewish himself so it made no sense whatsoever other than he was a maniac, why he targeted Jews. In fact it was sort of implied that he was aracial and evilutionary purist, and wanted all Jew blood and gayd and handicapped people removed from the population. Which again made no sense to me considering his lineage. I always found it unsettling that one maniac could make his entire country go psycho with nothing to support him --like religion. In my eyes Hitler was the shining example of non-belief since obviously the Real Christans in Murica were fighting against him. It literally blows my mind that self proclaimed Christians would opt to omitthe Catholic involvement in the war altogether, considering that Christianity here was based upon freedom from the European religious oppression. I guarantee if I posted a meme about Hitler and the Catholic involvement--90% of my friends and family have little knowledge about Hitler being a self proclaimed Christian. The fact that Hitler was acting upon an interpretation of the Bible that differs from mainstream Christianity today doesn't change historical fact. In short, I'm highly disappointed with. the American education I received.

If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

Atheists. That's not to say that Christians wouldn't have been worse, they just didn't have access to the same level of weaponry available to the secular governments in the 20th century.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

You know, people kill people. That's never going to change unless people stop finding reasons to kill other people. So yeah, never going to change. When a god is in the picture, there's more reason to kill. Reference: History.
And don't go tellin me that a lack in belief in a god means there's nothing keeping me from killing; for one, the intended victim might have a gun. Or a knife. Or I could get caught and put on death row or hanged or stoned by the public. I might try to blow up someones car and accidentally blow myself up in the process. I might feel bad about it. They might have had kids or loved ones that would make me feel bad about it, or they could enact revenge and I'd die by their hands. I might feel so badly about it I kill myself. We're social creatures, and just like anything else in this world nothing's stopping us--certainly no god--but that doesn't mean there aren't evolutionary reasons not to kill. As they say: you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Communists killed over 100 million people.

The Nazis would have killed that many if they had won World War Two and established the thousand year Reich. Also, the Communists while claiming to be atheists, were adherents to an ideology which is a religion (so were the Nazis). Everyone below should read this article to understand where I am coming from.

I know Communism pretty well, because when I was a teenager I was of the Trotskyite variety. For example; I was involved (well not too seriously) in a student Marxist group here in Australia called Resistance.

Silly question. What kills people is not belief or disbelief, but intolerant dogmatic ideology - ain't no one got a monopoly on that.

RE: Who killed more people Atheists or Christians?
There is no question that, whether or not Hitler and Stalin were atheists, the majority of the people who were carrying out their orders were probably Christians, whether or not they were allowed to practice openly. Which pretty much just goes to show that even if it's an atheist issuing commands, Christians seemingly can't resist the opportunity to wipe out huge numbers of people. The number of actual, committed atheists in Nazi Germany and Stalin's USSR, however evil, would have accomplished precisely jack shit in terms of mass murder if not for the willing and eager collaboration of a much larger population of Christians.

The majority of people in the 20th c. were xtians. So, more killers were xtians. Because xtianity is the majority, pretty much any subcategory will be will be within that majority.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste -- don't pollute it with bullshit.
