RE: will these religions ever come to an end?

yes, very well put.
It is not that god is immortal, or certainly not infinite. More so it is that a theorized god would be above the mechanisms of time and space.
Religions won't end, I suppose.
Sometimes we wish they would, but that is not fully thought out (I think).
I would like to see more people relating to god on their own terms though. Less religion, more spirituality, if you will...

Religions may end, they may not. Because it depends how long the human race lasts and how much they're change over time I guess, and I know of no way of legitimately predicting which way it will go by actually properly weighing the probabilities (how can I/could I do that?), that's the problem!!

Religion will never end as long as we exsist.. Why? well im sure you have heard the saying "Theres a sucker born every minute" that and we are all born ignorant and naive. We also harbor the ability to throw up walls and belive anything, even in the face of evedence of the contrary. Only when you truly open your mind and examine the evedence you will find the truth.

... but then how do you know?
How long do you think we'll exist as a species then eh?
Or perhaps rather: What do you estimate to be about the longest? Can you judge it? And if, it could be a really really long time like millions more years or more, how could you actually properly judge such a distant future?

Well seeing how its already a unkowable question... The best you can offer is your opinion. beyond a few hundred years (if that) noone could even start to predict with any accuracy what will happen. Hell 3000 years from now a god may show himiself (highly unlikely) in wich case you will still have a split of those that belive its a god and those who think it is just a highly advanced race/entity posing as a god to reap the rewards.
But to answer this question you would have to KNOW how long we will exsist and will we continue to prosper as we have, or will we suffer a catastophic event and get blown halfway back to the stone age. Possibilities are endless so the real answer is... ITS POSSIBLE

Well said mate, can't argue with that.
What I'm trying to get at is why you think it would be more likely that religion lasts as long as the human race does. I'm not sure I can come up for any arguments either way... so/and I'm not sure if I can judge the probability.

I'm not sure if it was Dawkins who said this, but he attributed religion to something similar to a group mentality. I mean, we can see, even from today, it's done quite well in gelling communities together, an example is the united conviction in the Muslim faith, even though they may be more than hostile towards those of a differing belief. Moreover, it has helped communities in the past, like Emperor Constantine who used Christianity as a weapon against Rome itself. So I guess religion DID have a few practical purposes, perhaps that's why our ancestors decided it was better not to do away with it..
But the question is the future. Once again drawing reference to what Dawkins (probably) said above, I personally think some people HAVE to believe in something. Perhaps their religious foundations were too deep to drill away, perhaps the consolation of a heaven-bound loved one, or, as theorized, an innate susceptibility towards spirituality.
If today's religion goes away, what will come next? After humans have scoured the Himalayas for Shangri-La, or discovered no Mount Olympus, it seems like we've already moved on to more powerful and, more importantly, non-discoverable gods to explain the unexplained spiritually. After we've reached the very ends of the universe, or traversed through the fourth dimension to no avail, I'm guessing humanity will STILL come up with something.
A897, you mentioned something about morality being innate, and that there was no need for religion. I was just thinking: perhaps if, one day, all religion was eradicated, and we were left with but our innate moral systems. Would that not then evolve into a religion? A basic set of rules derived from morality, and perhaps FAITH in a moral system or humanity?
Just a thought.

Well not absolutely of course...
Perhaps rather I should day:
Maybe one day belief in God will be so rare it will be like 1 in a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million or even less? Effectively extinct?
Cos yeah I don't think ideas can end. Of course not I say.
