I feel that this is an important point. I'm a structural engineering student. I work researching new methods of testing and construction. One also wonders if god draws the line anywhere, or if everything we do of any use is part of his "gifts." Is my erotica, my first taste of publishing success, also a gift from god, or can I really attribute the hours I spent up late writing and editing for that? Does god gift porn stars their success? What about serial killers?
Or is it just a certain set of pre-approved successes that god gets to steal the credit for? Am I working in one of the few fields where greedy christians won't rob me of my work to glorify their imaginary friend? 
Perhaps God gives us a skill set and then you choose with your will to use it for good or evil?

God gave everyone essentially the same skill set and abilities. It's personal choice to go pursue it. So while I can somewhat sympathize for the thanking for life beyond that God has little to nothing to do with it. So when you say we should thank God for the ability my response is it has nothing to do with God, and if you think it does then you spend years of your life learning it, since God gave you essentially the same brain.
