They just need to make a new new testament to help support gays and correct a few hundred things to keep up with the times.

The problem is centuries of book burning, downright forgery etc make it very, very difficult to know with any precision what Christ actually taught.
Douglas Lockhart's 'The Dark Side of God' makes a heroic attempt to do so and is therefore worth reading. Good luck though with any of the many branches of Christianity accepting the findings of modern biblical scholarship especially since it appears Christ was trying to tell us there's no need to insert religious authority and institutions between the individual and God.
